Guess who just spent 2 hours trying and failing to convince his 2000 EUR camera to show up as a webcam on his computer? It works in literally every piece of software (Zoom, Skype, etc.) except the one I need (Riverside).

Ugh. I guess this is why people just use a damn webcam...

Safeway today announced that it is closing its grocery store on Webster in the Fillmore in March.

My office learned of these plans today and immediately reached out to community leaders, Safeway, and the developer. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the Fillmore continues to have a grocery store.

This site should be able to accommodate both a grocery store and new housing. There’s no reason the current store should be shut down so abruptly.

They cut down mature trees today, violating a court order. 😢

“Healthy specimens of California's iconic redwoods and oaks used to adorn People's Park. The largest redwood on site was far older than the park itself... Over the years, the UC has felled several trees. What was a dense urban forest…was reduced to a handful of remaining trees. It is funny how we decide certain dates are beginnings or endings, but they really aren't, either.
Now that I am old, I feel like there are enough endings without adding any extras, but I'm not in charge of such things.
This is my last sunset photo of 2023, and it's a beauty.
For those of you using tomorrow as a springboard with resolutions leading to happiness and perfection, I wish you luck.
For me, it serves as a reminder to be thankful we made it through another year in one piece. Mostly.

The big + of a For You feed is to surface posts you could have missed that have great replies/conversations going on. I love to read people's opinions.
The only thing we have that is close enough is explore -> trending, but that is not enough.

I want something to surface posts in my timeline with x amount of replies. Sure, I could do it in @IceCubesApp, but this is not easy when purely client side.

@dimillian @IceCubesApp absolutely agree. I’ve found Mammoths implementation to be pretty good, but nothing like the big ones. I love a chronological feed, but it can become overwhelming quickly. I hope the mastodon project can add something - even if it’s only opt-in like text search

Just tried my hand at importing an SFPL recommendation list into BookWyrm and it was surprisingly easy! I was even able to add a deep link to place holds on the SFPL page!

@evan I’ve always been keen on “upgradable” content. Some amount is free, but subscription unlocks everything. I am not sure how that’d work with AP since history can be a somewhat challenging issue - and I’d certainly want content from before I followed

Not sure if anyone cares but I will be migrating from SFBA.social in the near future. The mod team has made the decision to federate with and I will not support it with my posts or donations. I do not believe in the slightest that Meta has good intentions or will it respect my privacy.

I think one of the reasons why Mastodon feels like a nicer place than other social media apps is that the technical complexity & federated nature only really attracts idealistic nerds who genuinely want a better internet. I almost never see assholes here, no engagement baiting, nothing. Ironically, this means that IMO any simplification and move towards mainstream appeal will almost automatically jeopardize this. Tough dilemma!

@Techaltar I have had this experience as well, and it really can be wonderful.

There are always assholes, and the shit doesn’t fall evenly, but it seems like there’s real interest in building an environment to mitigate their impact. I’m excited for that fediverse 🎉
