If you're looking for a reliable and responsibly moderated Fediverse server to sign up on or move to, I run a website that lists them:

All servers listed comply with the Covenant (https://fedi.garden/about-this-site/) and have opted in to being listed.

Follow the site's account to keep up to date on the latest servers added to the site:

If you want help with moving a Mastodon account to another server, here's a step-by-step guide:

Some accounts use a "BOT" label. This doesn't mean anything bad, it just means the account is posting in an automated way.

Lots of bots are useful or entertaining. For example the bot @VoteChess runs chess games where people vote on the next move. You can find more useful bots listed by @FediFollows at https://fedi.directory/tag/bots/

If you run a bot account, here's how to label it:

  1. Log in through your server's website
  2. Click "Edit profile"
  3. Tick "This is a bot account"
  4. Click "Save changes"

If you're uploading to , it's important to include tags, because these will make it a lot easier for people to notice your video.

PeerTube tags automatically appear as hashtags on Mastodon, so people searching or following those hashtags will see your video 👍

If you use more than one word in a tag, it will automatically be converted into a single phrase.

(PT tags have always worked as hashtags on Mastodon, but starting in Masto 4.2.0 the tags are actually visible below the video.)

Hey server admins!

Do you run a small server and you wish it had a wider view of the Fediverse, with more results from searches? You might want to try using relays:

If general relays take up too many resources, try using a more specific topic or instance relay feed from FediBuzz:

When you follow someone on Mastodon, you will see their replies in your Home timeline only if:

  • They mention you

OR

  • They mention someone else you follow

OR

  • They are replying to themselves to build a thread

OR

  • Someone you follow has boosted their reply

This applies to replies with public, unlisted or followers-only visibilities.

You can browse their replies to people you don't follow on their profile page in the Posts & Replies tab.

If you're posting an image on here, please remember to add a text description for people who cannot see. Blind people use the internet through screen reader software which reads text out loud.

The level of detail needed depends on the image, but generally you should try to explain whatever is important and relevant in the picture.

If you forget a description, just edit the post and add it in afterwards! The bot @PleaseCaption can remind you if needed.

There are lots of ways you can use #RSS on the Fediverse:

-Follow any Mastodon account's public posts through RSS by putting .rss at the end of their profile URL. Use this address in your feed reader software.

-Follow any PeerTube account or channel by clicking the options menu next to the Subscribe button and selecting RSS.

-If you are on a Friendica server, you can use it as a feed reader. Paste an RSS feed address in the search box, that feed's posts will appear in your home timeline.

No app yet, use it through these sites. Subreddits are called "Magazines". You can interact with magazines from other servers.

If you want a music, podcast and audio platform for the Fediverse, you might want to check out Funkwhale:

You can follow their official account at:

Channels on Funkwhale can be followed from Mastodon, anyone can start their own server.

Given the situation with , perhaps Funkwhale might be a basis for an alternative? (I'm not a musician so I don't know how good a fit it is for artists and bands, but hope it is useful or could be developed?)

If you're posting a link on Mastodon, you'll probably want to add https:// to the beginning so it is clickable.

For example fedi.tips isn't clickable but https://fedi.tips is clickable.

The reason https:// is required is in case people want to include dots in words or phrases without accidentally creating links.

p.s. Techy people might like to know that many non-web link types also work on here: https://, http://, gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// ssb://

Mastodon allows you to verify yourself as the owner of your website. If your website is well-known, then this will in effect verify your identity as well.

Some apps on here are offering AI/LLM for certain features such as entering an image description automatically.

If you are abled and sighted, please don't use these features.

If you are sighted and able to enter descriptions yourself, it would be better for the planet if you enter descriptions manually. Manual descriptions avoid anyone having to cause environmental damage.

So-called "AI" features damage the planet:

Have you ever noticed an account on here labelled "Automated" or "Bot"?

It means the account is a bot, operating automatically without a human doing the posting.

This might sound odd, but there are many useful and entertaining , for example posting sports results or weather bulletins or public domain art. Other bots run interactive games of chess or D&D campaigns or text adventures.

  1. Log in through your server’s website, or some apps also support thread muting
  2. Go to one of your posts in the thread you want to mute
  3. Click ⋯ and select Mute Conversation
