ICYMI, endorsed for Speaker.

Hence, @emptywheel:

Anyway, Jim Jordan for Speaker would solidify GOP brand:

Crime-riddled district Jordan refuses to help.
Overlooking sexual assault.
Helping Trump dodge accountability for his crimes.
Weaponizing government to serve crime.

Criminal protection racket as political party.

jerrylevine,

@GottaLaff

It's an absurd argument that

A. Because Gaetz is alleged to a sex trafficker, and
B. He is not in prison/jail/etc., thus
C. the FBI/President/Etc. must also be pederasts.

Good morning from New York.

The mood is more relaxed in Manhattan Supreme Court today. The crowds have ebbed, now that the lead defendant is no longer in town for NYAG v. Trump.

Yesterday, the atmosphere was... different.

jerrylevine,

@GottaLaff The trial has been adjourned for a lunch break. McConney is scheduled to resume testifying at 2:15 p.m. ET.

jerrylevine,

@GottaLaff You're welcome! 🤗

Hey! Are you a liberal or progressive now blaming Democrats for saying things like "we're happy to do this in a way" or "we remain open to working with our colleagues?" Do you understand that BLAMING for that is actually Really Dumb™?

Look, I totally LOVE when the D's get all sassy; I'm pretty partisan myself. I love when or or others take down the R's. BUT...

  1. People like the sound of bipartisan. It doesn't make any sense, but they like it! /1

Oh, wow, imagine if judges applied this logic to cases:

"The filing of fifty-plus nearly identical copy-cat lawsuits (all by a single lawyer), presumably without any pre-suit effort at resolution, imposes an extraordinary burden on the judicial system and raises legitimate questions about whether the lawsuits are being brought in good faith or are, instead, a means of litigation blackmail filed by a trademark 'troll.'"

jerrylevine,

@design_law If you have to tell a judge "[w]e're not trolls," you're probably trolls."

(I think this is in the set of truisms, like "If a headline ends in a question mark, the answer is 'no'.")

Elizabeth, is this during the interview process or during the application process? I believe that MN has a "ban the box" law, but that doesn't mean you can't ask the question during the interview itself... But it could be a CYA situation.

@academicchatter

jerrylevine,

@wrigleyfield
That's typically it... Those statutes only prevented on the application, and not in the interview. My guess, and this is purely speculation, is that they are being overly cautious. That being said I think it's a reasonable question to ask someone who's applying and could be in close contact...

I've asked a friend who's in another university's legal department what they do; I'll let you know if I get any response.

    @marcelias Marc, what do you think about the announcements from the San Francisco GOP that their registrations are significantly up this year?

    That being said, going from 1 registered to 2 is a 100% increase, so it's hard to tell.

    Idk which airline to choose anymore. It use to be that the airline industry had monopolized proving the most garbage experience imaginable, but lately there's been an arms race towards making a somewhat decent product. United launched Polaris where you get your own little pod, then delta tried to one up them with Delta One Suite, JetBlue (originally a budget airline) randomly came out with their own business class suites, now Delta has gone and built their own private business class terminal at LAX complete with its own dedicate TSA screening.

    jerrylevine,

    @malwaretech If you're at a hub, it always makes sense to choose the largest airline at that hub. I am 10 minutes from Newark and while I can get tickets on other airlines, United (or Star Alliance) is almost exclusively what I'll fly.

    There has to be a price difference large enough to make it worthwhile to fly any other airline (and really worth it to fly out of LGA or JFK).

    I would suggest getting the mid- or high-end credit card for the airline(s) you're going to fly, though...

    🤦🏻‍♀️ Supreme Court rules in favor of Catholic school that fired a teacher for having premarital sex

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/15/us/new-jersey-catholic-school-premarital-sex-firing

    jerrylevine,

    @GottaLaff
    The result sucks, but this was a contracts case dressed up in religious freedom costume.

    The teacher had a signed employment agreement & code of conduct with the Catholic school that explicitly said she could be terminated for this. They also terminated a male teacher for the same reason.

    It may suck, but it is probably the correct decision. I'm presuming that our legislature will be fixing this soon anyway.
