The only place I have found Palestinian voices is on Twitter, even as a broken site, and even with all the censorship of Palestinian voices. And the most heartbreaking thing is when journalists who were updating us with the most horrific updates, photos and videos tweet "this might be my last tweet," and their friends say "X's home was bombed and we haven't heard from them in 3 hours" "a new day and there is no news about X."

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@timnitGebru Same for Syrian voices when that country was falling apart. I followed one guy from Homs. He posted every day. He took care of his elderly parents. Ordinary life, but with awareness of uncertainty and danger beyond his control. The posts became increasingly dire and the news was the same. Then silence.

The modern corporate obsession with data is beyond incorrect, it's obscene.

If I order a pizza, there's no universe where the social contract should include a follow-up email about a survey. IT'S A PIZZA. And moreover, I PAID FOR IT WITH MONEY. You are not entitled to 5 minutes of my time to fill out your fucking survey.

Any marketer or data scientist who tells you that every pizza that gets ordered should also generate a survey request email IS FULL OF SHIT and is ABUSING YOUR CUSTOMERS.

What I still don’t understand about the Israeli decision to level so much of Gaza, is just who do they think is going to pay to re-house these people later? I also don’t understand why the IDF is making the unforced PR error of not revealing the intelligence behind some of these strikes. It’s not enough to generalize. They should show some specific examples of what made a target a target.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@shoq Near instantaneous horrifying images from battlefields evoke our empathy (as they should). We wish to decide for ourselves whether the Israeli strikes in Gaza are somehow justified. At the very least we want explanations. The problem is that targeting decisions are not made as we see in movies. Intelligence is rarely complete or definitive. It only has to be good enough to assess risk, the military value and power used are all in balance. Most people would not be satisfied.

@RickiTarr My doctor, responding to my complaint about stress, told me that “life is stress” and offered the following advice,

“If you are standing, sit down. If you are sitting, then lay down and if you are lying down you might as well take a nap.”

Home automation stans: with the Home app on iOS/Mac can I send myself a notification or other alert if a temperature sensor goes above or below a temperature range?

(I can google myself, so please only reply if you have setup something like this for yourself.)

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@thomasfuchs Yes, but you may need additional software (free) to create the automation.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@thomasfuchs I will provide more details later. Busy right now …

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@thomasfuchs I really thought I had this, but no. I do get notifications but these are built in to the individual device. For example, my garage door. iOS Home does not provide notifications from temperature or humidity sensors. The most common solutions out there require additional apps. There are multiple approaches. A favorite seems to be an app called Pushcut.

The Israeli government has cut off food, water, and fuel to 2 million people inside Gaza as part of its campaign to stamp out Hamas terrorism. Collective punishment is not only contrary to international law, it is inhumane and illogical. It is what my community once endured in World War II, all because of the actions of others who happened to share our ethnicity. Have we learned nothing? How will this possibly help deescalate the violence rather than radicalize many more? It is madness.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@georgetakei A blockade will hurt ordinary Gaza residents, not Hamas. Hamas has almost certainly stockpiled supplies for its fighters. I also doubt that a blockade will sway anyone’s opinion. I cannot fathom a military reason for a blockade other than interception of weapons and ammunition.

    @RickiTarr Fascism is not democracy as usual. It is anti-democracy. It is not “just politics.” It is about whether you will be a slave to the State the rest of your life, and that of your children as well. Will you fight not to be enslaved?

    I stand by what I've long said. Attacks on civilians are never justified. Hamas terrorist attacks, which have killed 200 Israeli civilians, are condemnable, inexcusable, and horrific. My deepest condolences to the loved ones of those lost.

    Furthermore, Hamas is not Palestine. Israel's attacks, which have killed 230 Palestinian civilians, are condemnable, inexcusable, & horrific. Israel now cutting off electricity to 2M+ Gazan civilians is collective punishment & violates international law.

    @Adam_Cadmon1 I told my kids this when each one was looking at college: “College is not about getting a job. It is about becoming a good citizen of the world. If ALL you want is a job, go into a specialized program or trade school.”

    I realize that I might be a relic of another age on this topic, but I still believe it to be true.

    I’m in the outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. The sky is clear and the is bright enough to provide dim illumination. I just heard a howl from the distance. Another one, closer, answered it. Then a pack behind me and several more on each side joined in. Are they howling at the moon? At prey? At me? I can’t see them, which is how they want it. I walked the dozen or so paces to my shelter, and now I am telling you all about it. I still hear them, nearby.

    meltedcheese,
    @meltedcheese@c.im avatar

    @johnshirley2024 Coping with #climatechange will require at least the same level of #disaster #preparedness that is recommended for hurricanes, earthquakes and so forth. The new part is that the disaster never ends. So at some point coping tips into bug-out #prepping, safe places, and probably personal protection (because you are prepared and they are not). It probably won’t be more difficult than living in a desert war zone.

    meltedcheese,
    @meltedcheese@c.im avatar

    @johnshirley2024 You’ve made a great start and honestly, it is the first practical discussion I’ve seen. We need to talk more about how to permanently adapt to the change that is upon us. There won’t be any going back. So what do we need to do to adapt, survive and thrive? What do we teach the young ones, because they will have the greatest burden?

    meltedcheese,
    @meltedcheese@c.im avatar

    @johnshirley2024 The climate-migration emergency is extremely serious. What will advantaged nations do when 10s of millions of people, or many more, are on the move? Humanity has not experienced anything like this before.
