Teacher: William Shakespeare is credited with the invention of over 1,700 words. He was a linguistic genius.

Student: Can I make up words and use them in my papers?

Teacher: Absolutely fucking not.

Going through my notes on There Are No Accidents by Jessie Singer (@JessieSinger), and I figured I'd share them here as I process them.

This is a book about how our systemic decisions make America a dangerous place to live. It really made clear to me that Covid is nothing new. We've always been needlessly cavalier with each other's lives - especially the lives of the poorest and most marginalized among us.

You can get the book here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/There-Are-No-Accidents/Jessie-Singer/9781982129682

Some accidents we try very hard to avoid. Others we accept as simply inevitable. Which kinds of accidents are which is not a matter of chance, it is driven by underlying power structures.

Back in the 1920s, when a person was killed by a car, people rioted.

Any experienced programmer worth their salt will tell you that •producing• code — learning syntax, finding examples, combining them, adding behaviors, adding complexity — is the •easy• part of programming.

The hard part: “How can it break? How will it surprise us? How will it change? Does it •really• accomplish our goal? What •is• our goal? Are we all even imagining the same goal? Do we understand each other? Will the next person to work on this understand it? Should we even build this?”

As part of a wave of layoffs, I got laid off from my backend development job last month as the company's financials I was working with have been steadily decreasing. I applied for another job shortly after, and after a month of interviews and an honestly great response from their team, at the last minute, they told me that they were focusing their hiring efforts away from the US and towards Singapore. With Calckey donations, I don't have enough money to pay for rent or groceries. So I'm asking to , I'm the lead developer on the Calckey project, and I'm a fullstack, multi-language developer. I have 3+ years of enterprise experience, and I work great on teams as well as solo. Resume and references available upon request.

This is HUGE.

"The National Labor Relations Board ruled Tuesday that employers can no longer demand laid-off employees avoid publicly disparaging the company as part of their severance agreements, nor can they stop affected employees from disclosing the terms of their exit packages. Doing so, the federal agency determined, would be a violation of the laid-off employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act."

Seriously. Every single month I have to tell a client not to spank their children. Many are surprised when I share how studies show that physical abuse (spanking) leads to worse-behaved, traumatized, violent children.

A few years ago, I was waiting to cross the street in Manhattan, when this lady approached me. As I turned to her, she hands me a card. She's a psychic.

So I promptly returned the card back, and replied:

"You already know I'm not coming."

(And we both laughed.)

Also in 1983, Lucasfilm (later Pixar) made the first high-resolution computer-generated image that was supposed to be near-photorealistic and "a single-frame movie".

"The Road to Point Reyes" took a month to render.

Here is the thing you have to understand about VCs (and therefore, companies and websites that have accepted VC money), always and forever. Repeat it like a mantra.

--- Venture capitalists do not invest in the company. Venture capitalists invest in the exit. ---

Eventually any site, app whatever has a Sell Out Moment. They get bought by a big established corp, they go IPO, something. There is an "Exit". If you accept VC money, you are promising that Exit day is coming and it will be big.

The end of twitter as a microcosm of the end of capitalism:

People banding together, helping each other out, trying to salvage what is good, shifting to something unfamiliar, discovering new norms and ways of life.

Revealing the revulsion and stupidity of kings & oligarchs. Former hierarchies tumbling down, some being resurrected, but without the same kind of hold.

Rest, repair, reconciliation.

One tool we have at work to ablate harassment is a set of tags for our public issue tracker - “abuse” and “admin” that summon a mod within the hour; what we tell people is, if it’s obviously abusive, tag it as such, but if it’s on the line, or you’re not sure, or you’re just uncomfortable and thinking “I want somebody who isn’t me to deal with … whatever this is”, use the admin flag.

Under the hood both tags do exactly the same thing, but:

As a community manager or leader the worst thing you tolerate is what your community becomes. The worst thing you walk past is who you are. And in open source communities the blast radius of that negligence is enormous; for every person you can see pushing back against toxicity there might be dozens, hundreds or thousands peeking in, seeing that this is how you and your project have decided to live, shaking their heads and silently moving on, knowing they have better options.

Seriously though, fedi was built by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is the reason the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

So .
