Max Bergmann, a former State Department official and now program director with the Center for Strategic International Studies, predicts Russian-fueled turbulence at the Democratic national convention in August. He foresees attempts of Russian operatives to infiltrate groups of protestors and attempt to turn protests violent.

He also notes that social media has “become way more of a cesspool than it was in 2016.”

John Ganz, who says that loving books has always been the definition of Jewishness for him as a Jew, reflects on images of Israeli soldiers burning books in light of Heinrich Heine's oft-quoted statement that where people burn books, they'll end up burning people. Heine's observation took on gruesome meaning when the Nazis inaugurated their reign of terror by burning books.

"It's always important to remember there are on the one hand the Nazis who commit acts of violence, and then there are the other good people who are not Nazis, but who want what Nazis want and frame things the same way Nazis do, but who must be understood to have absolutely nothing to do with Nazis, because they are so very good and nice and kind and generous and are in fact very fine."

"Tens of millions of Americans reasonably doubt that Alito can fairly discharge his duties. Alito is gaslighting the American people—a technique he learned from Trump. Having been caught in his lie he is doubling down on the lie—while pretending to be aggrieved that Americans doubt his veracity.

This debacle is a stain on the Court and an indictment of Justice Robert’s leadership."

“Justice Alito has no problem telling American women they lack the right to make decisions about their own bodies and health. But apparently, he can’t tell his wife to take down a flag that calls the integrity of his decisions on the Supreme Court into question. He doesn’t care. He has life tenure and there are no repercussions binding ethics rules he must obey.”

"U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has formally refused to recuse from any and all cases involving indicted ex-president Donald Trump or the January 6, 2021 attack on the seat of the American government and American democracy itself."

Mark Sumner asks why a bunch of billionaries and Silicon Valley types including Elon Musk are coming out as pronatalists who want to ring alarm bells about declining birthrates.

In my view, the answer to the question is that these folks want in any way they can to reverse the movement for women's rights of the past century. Their primary objective is to blame women – women's liberation – for declining birthrates.

@mekkaokereke Ah, but it seems clear to me it is primarily about controlling and subjugating women — who are, after all, childbearers. This is not to say that it cannot also convey deep white supremacist notions. But to stress that idea in an exclusive way, we's have to ignore the fact that many men of color leading nations buy into the very same notion that women are primarily childbearers and should be forced to bear children.

As Jody Kantor shows, Alito's flag story doesn't add up.

"The justice told Fox News that his wife hoisted the flag in response to Ms. Baden’s vulgar insult. A text message and the police call — corroborated by Fairfax County authorities — indicate, however, that the name-calling took place on Feb. 15, weeks after the inverted flag was taken down."

The Badens are the neighbors that Alito blames for provoking his wife to fly her flag.

wdlindsy,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

"But in the Baden family’s version, the justice’s wife initiated the conflict. 'Aside from putting up a sign, we did not begin or instigate any of these confrontations,' Ms. Baden said later….

"On Feb. 15, the couple were pulling in trash bins when the Alitos, who seemed to be on a stroll, appeared. Mrs. Alito addressed the pair by name, used an expletive and called them 'fascists,' the couple told The Times and said in texts at the time. Justice Alito remained silent, they added."

"What’s most striking is the sheer pettiness of the Alitos, but the one factual reveal is that the key confrontation that Alito said prompted his wife to raise the distress signal actually came after the flag at the Alitos was already taken down. … Alito’s explanation never made sense. On what planet does your neighbor protesting a coup attempt require you to trot out pro-coup symbols?"

It has to be noted: Alito belongs to or is closely connected to the right-wing Catholic cult to which Leonard Leo, Supreme Court kingmaker belongs, Opus Dei. This cult has long been known to think that lying "for the Lord" is justifiable to do.

Dan Froomkin says that the finding of polls that low-information voters who prefer Trump do not read or listen to news does not let the corporate media off the hook, as many media folks are now claiming.

He notes that "the elite media has a vast influence on the national discourse." The elite media frame stories as important or unimportant, with national influence. They don't merely report news: they make news.

Froomkin writes,

"I believe that by sticking to the traditional both-sides format of political news coverage – rather than constantly sounding the alarm over Trump and MAGA --- the elite media has created a permission structure for those low-information voters to throw up their hands and say 'whatever.'"

"If Donald Trump were in office today—presiding over full employment at a time when Americans enjoyed more purchasing power than ever before, and inflation was hovering steadily around three percent—he and Republican officeholders across the country would claim credit for building the greatest economy in history. "Letting people who hate Democrats or who are perennial critics of the U.S. economic system make all the strong claims about the economy, while the people in charge hide behind empathy for those left behind, is a big reason why public opinion and economic reality have detached from one another."

/4

wdlindsy,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

If Republicans are in charge, the economy is good!

If Democrats are in charge, the economy is bad!

And many Democrats have allowed the right to lock themselves into a defensive posture in which they feel compelled always to apologize for the economic performance of Democratic administrations, with claims that many folks are being left behind by economic recovery.

The media assist Republicans in framing matters in this way, it has to be noted.
