? I've been catching up on series I previously DNFd. Read Duke of Desire by Hoyt -- still way too emo and icky for me, I should've let it lay. Reading Cross Breed by Leigh -- ehh, she sucked me in.

Also started Expiration Dates by Serle but I'm finding the structure frustrating. I want to know what happens now, not what happened every other time! I suppose it will make sense as a novel, so maybe I should save it for another time.

Felt very overwhelmed this morning at the prospect of packing up the rental. Was here for a month and I brought a lot of baking things. But I did a very intentional job packing when I left. Everything has a bin, a tote, a spot in the suitcase.

I'm reminded once again that it's not that I dislike cleaning. And truly I actually might enjoy it?¿ It's the emotional/mental load of having to making choices about stuff that doesn't have a place. What to toss, what to keep, etc.

@MsHearthWitch lol, I was pondering recommending white to you when I saw your post, but decided against giving unsolicited advice. She has the most useful, functional ideas I've ever found.

Finished my 2nd book, Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton, illustrated by Aska.

A charming graphic novel, queer, and super geeky. Maisie, (14, disabled, bi, writes fanfic) meets Ollie (15, nonbinary, draws fanart) at her first SF con and they have a wonderful day-long romance.

I really enjoyed the vicarious con experience, Maisie's relationship with her mum, and the sweetness of that instant connection. Hope we get a happy sequel someday.

hub: "I found this debate between Barbara Cartland and another romance author... Jackie Collins."

me: "Jackie Collins didn't write romance!"

hub: "What did she write?"

me: ".... trash."

😳🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

How would you describe Jackie Collin's books in a non-judgemental way? Are they in fact romance? 🤯

My first story was from my TBR, I'll Be Home for Christmas by Mason Deaver. It's a short follow-up to the YA romance I Wish You All the Best, in which Ben tries to surprise their boyfriend Nathan for Christmas but winds up snowed in at the airport. An affecting holiday rom-com.

#WhatchaReading ? I finished A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams, which reminded me a bit of One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston -- both use a fantastic scenario to engage with some lesser known history.

This was often sweet and funny, and the tributes to 1920s Harlem and Black musicians are lovely, but the tone mixture of goofy romcom and high stakes fated love didn't gel for me.

“With nearly as many hospitalizations in January 2024 as in January 2023, it’s clear that is not growing milder and it’s not fading away. The real question, then, is not whether COVID is still a pandemic, but how much COVID illness and death are we willing to accept?”

@augieray Don't think much of this line: "If you know you are going to be around strongly immunocompromised people, being extra careful is a kind thing to do."

Yeah, it's kind to make an effort not to kill someone. But you know, no big whoop. 🤬

Anyone have a particular plant you're just itching to add to your garden this year (ornamental)? I've become quite enamored with Red Hot Poker (Kniphophia spp.) I think it'll look lovely contrasting with the pink/purple blooms of coneflower and the purples of Monarda

? I seem to be in a slump. Started The Last List of Mabel Beaumont but it quickly turned into one of my worst personal nightmares. In Scrap Metal by Harper Fox but it's a bit too dark. Read The Dress of the Season (free on Amazon) but it was just okay. Tried the graphic novel of Every Day and it was so dull. Bleh.

Serious question, please boost for reach.

I’m a 50+ white male.

How many old white guys out there would be willing join a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to oppose old white guys in positions of power? How many people would be willing to provide financial support for the same?

Nothing like this currently exists in the U.S. and I think it could be a damn effective form of protest. Personally, I’m sick and tired of seeing old fucking white guys in power everywhere I turn. Am I an aberration?

Oh, and despite thinking of myself as a bit of wordsmith, I’m admittedly terrible at acronym generation. What’s a good name for an organization pursuing said mission?

? Mentioning Erin Satie got me to check and see if she had anything new out, and I found a suspenseful fantasy novella about an imprisoned rebel leader/witch being rescued by friends (or a lover?) she no longer remembers. It's not very well rated, which I hope doesn't mean it has a sad ending or something. :-( Possibly just that it's not her usual genre.

Does anyone else have trouble doing one thing at a time? Like if I'm doing chores it helps to have a podcast or talk to someone, or watching TV, I need to do something with my hands, like a little handy craft, or a simple game. I love movies, but the movie has to be absolutely fascinating for me to want to go to a theater where I just need to sit there and watch. I have a large amount of tabs open on my phone all the time and I flit back and forth through a bunch of different things. Weed helps calm this down a bit.

willaful,
@willaful@romancelandia.club avatar

@RickiTarr Absolutely. An audiobook makes chores doable. I rarely watch tv without doing word puzzles at the same time. I've always been like this, it's not a modern attention span thing.

? I just finished The Oak and the Ash by Annick Trent. I thought the first in the series was good but had plotting issues; no complaints about this one! Realistic portrayal of the lives of 1800s queer working people, with a sweet, slow burn romance. (Hard to have anything else for them!) For a comp I'd give Erin Satie, because of the focus on period technologies and intellectual interests.
