Obviously the Kremlin drone story is still very much a breaking one, but people should really stop talking about this as an attempted assassination attempts against Putin. That's just playing to Kremlin talking points 1/

@Tilopa

This is the issue with mainstream social media too, lots of arm chair 'experts' shouting their opinion as to what happened, followed by an equally useful army of people boosting those posts.

This ends up with a narrative with little merit, somehow becoming the main truth narrative.

But yeah, we should not be speculating until there is some substance behind why something happened.

Thank you for this, really helpful. This also doubles up as evidence to counter any claims that 'no one uses the fediverse' if people try that as an excuse not to give it a go. It also counters any cliams the fediverse is hard to use.

My employer, Shopify, announced layoffs today and I've been affected. If you're looking for someone with deep experience with developer tooling and developer environments, I'd love to work with you. I've spent the last two years building Shopify's in-house cloud developer environment, and I have extensive experience building developer tools as one of members of the Homebrew package manager's Project Leadership Committee.

I suspect Mastodon.social has made a big mistake (as in big is part of the problem) by making themselves the default server with open sign ups. They might as well have hung a "trolls enter here" welcome sign out. Moderating well at scale is hard and requires a lot of human effort, it's going to be an instance full of newbies who will be encountering trolls while not understanding how the fediverse works and who have a client mentality (let me speak to the manager!). They're also going to end up being walled off from a lot of the smaller, more conscientious instances who want to protect their members so won't even get to see what the fediverse can be.

I suspect the fediverse really would be better served by slow growth on it's own prosocial path than trying to compete with platforms run by antisocial billionaires. We're not competing for customers, those number metrics aren't important, it needs to be quality over quantity and thinking of fediversians as citizens not clients. I know that's a hard mindset for some people, especially people who have had to work in corporate environments, to let go of but it's essential to let it go to be truly able to build prosocial things (not all competition is bad, of course, but the corporate kind is). It's always important to think about whether we're being treated like a citizen/person or a client/product (whether it's by our governments, a healthcare professional, and in terms of technological tools). Do you belong or are you being used while you're profitable? And is someone trying to confuse you about which is which so you can't tell? (The latter means you're actively being conned.)

*I, of course, hope I am wrong and it all works out wonderfully. However, my instance having to silence mastodon.social because of trolls and bad actors and increased reports of crypto spamming, has made me think about how big instances require a very big, well trained/sensitive moderation team (aka professional moderation, there's not magical technological solution for this problem and AI isn't a magic fix either, these kinds of tech solutions are usually harmful as well). People are a slow medium, we can't solve our social problems with some form of magical automation.

Making mistakes is inevitable, what will be most important is how we recognise those errors and work to resolve the issues caused, and then work to ensure we learn from them. We are a community, if we learn then that is one of the most important things that can happen here.

As an artist, I would be offended anyway with the push to replace me with AI, but why does it always have to be presented as, “Haha! Artists are now obsolete! Check out this thing that AI just made!” before showing the worst piece of garbage content I’ve ever seen?

    zleap,

When you see people at work who are Master crafts people, what always comes across is the love, passion and attention to detail they put in to every job. This can be metalwork, wood work, fixing clocks or other items, it takes years of learning, practice and doing the job. The same for a good photographer, they know and understand their subject and can produce fantastic work as a result.

Ai lacks all of that, they get asked to produce X and just do it, there is no emotion that goes in to what is produced.

    zleap,

@therobburgessshow Maybe they are just inadequate when it comes to creativity, and AI is their way out and to blag they are good at something. I like home science, so just writing up my latest experiment, ok using LaTeX. So far I have drafted, redrafted, moved stuff around etc. This sort of thing takes time, effort and work to get the final document right.

Sure these AI bots could write it for me, what worries me is personal statements for jobs, I am really bad at these, I can work fine with kids, but ask me to write how my skills, experiemce match a job description I struggle. So do my best, now if another applicant gets chatGPT to do most of it for them, are they THAT good at writing am I at an disadvantage by not in effect cheating by using these tools.

As a teaching assistant, I may sound be pretty blunt in saying the first draft is always pretty rubbish, but that is a first draft, it is getting the ideas down, so subsequent drafts, the info is there, it just needs putting down in a better way.

Those of us who are good at our jobs are probably in less danger, if they get rid of the competent and keep the less competent then one day people will actually regret doing that.

Antibiotic resistance has contributed to millions of deaths worldwide. But besides developing resistance, there’s another threat: some bacteria are developing “antibiotic tolerance,” where they stay dormant until the human stops taking the antibiotics, then rebound. A microbiologist explains:

This is interesting and worrying at the same time, we seem to be having a hard time as it is with convincing people when they should and should not be using anti biotics.

It shows how nature can adapt and quickly to a given situation, I wonder how much of this, is down to more than taing anti biotics, there was a time when kids would get dirty, usually through play and could build up natural immunity, now we are obsessed with killing every known bug out there so we are never exposed to much in the way of bacteria.
