Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

The same justifications that people use to vote for were once used for . We can't afford to make the same mistake twice.

Good grief. Whenever I think British politics is fucked up beyond repair, I see that someone from across the pond is standing there saying "hold my beer".

What next: are they going to ban hand washing? Condoms? Seat belts in cars?

Right-wing Australian billionaire and money-bag climate change denier Gina Reinhart apparently doesn't want people to see her portrait by the Indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira in the National Gallery.

So it would be just awful if people share this article and her portrait.

Car manufacturers have started treating cars like glorified smartphones.

They’re embedded with sensors and processors with increasing connectivity, which means vast amounts of data is being generated on your driving behaviours everytime you take the wheel. 😬

We’ve seen insurance & advertising business models being trialled based on the data gathered from your car. Law enforcement agencies are also getting in on it, getting the tools to access these new data sources.

Countries that spent a lot on things for the public, and countries that had austerity, both had high inflation.

But the countries that spent on the public are now booming, the austerity countries are struggling.

Apple shares lost 10% of their value.

Then Apple announced plans to buy back $110 billion of its own stock.

After that, Apple shares had their best day since 2022.

There's a reason stock buybacks used to be considered illegal stock manipulations.

They should still be banned.

"Palestinian life under Israeli occupation – An illustrated guide"

"Every year on May 15, Palestinians mark the Nakba – the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 by Zionist militias.

"In the 76 years since the Nakba, Israel’s control over the Palestinian people has affected every aspect of life, from services they can access & where they can travel, to what resources they can use & where on their own land they can build homes."

We have found the limits of the digital world. There is still a need for human beings. HMRC should acknowledge the fact https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/15/we-have-found-the-limits-of-the-digital-world-there-is-still-a-need-for-human-beings-hmrc-should-acknowledge-the-fact/ HMRC is failing the public. It’s doing so by choice. It’s refusing to talk to people who want help. It’s trying to make them use digital services instead, and they refuse to do that. Maybe, just maybe, what HMRC has actually discovered is that there is a role for human beings after all.

@RichardJMurphy back in June last year I had a self-assessment issue dealing with my dad's estate that couldn't be sorted through their digital "tools". Tried phoning and automated message said self assessment helpline was closed until September (!). In desperation, since his estate was threatened with daily fines, phoned through to their IT support line, and the very helpful lady there gave me just the tax advice and support I needed!!

In the most glorious "fuck you" I have seen in a while, you know the book that Cumberland City Council banned because they're homophobic bigots - Holly Duhig's "A focus on Same Sex Parents"? Well, the publisher, BookLife Publishing, have made a PDF version of the book available for free.

Sure be a shame if it was shared far and wide now, wouldn't it?

Every time you ban a book filled with hope and kindness, and care and love, we will resist.

27 April Have you ever written a section and subconsciously plagiarised another work?

Not a whole section, just an idea. Do you recognise this?

‘Are you happy?’
It’s the only question she asks these days. I have never lied to my mother.
‘In our own way.’
She reaches out a thin hand. ‘You can’t be happy in your own way, only unhappy. I want to know about you.’
‘I am happy.’
It’s the first time I have ever lied to her. She smiles her disbelieving smile.

12/5: How do you market your work?
I give talks and do book signings in local cafes and bookshops. Local festivals are a problem because I am in France, but now I have translated into French I have a French-language book to promote and can start going to those.
