Jeremiah, Very important for Swedes to vote in the EU Election. Privacy is a fundamental human right, even when there are bad people doing bad things. Mass surveillance by the government does more harm than good.

travisfw, when a #privacy notice contains "we may collect and use personally identifying information" it should be called a "LACK OF privacy notice"
helma, @travisfw Yes.
travisfw, Also, how is it okay for the #search function on my phone to come with such a lack-of-privacy notice??
pluralistic, Noted anti-capitalist agitator Adam Smith had it right: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices."

18+ pluralistic, One of these companies is Plexure, partly owned by McDonald's, which provides the surveillance-pricing back-ends for McD's, Ikea, 7-Eleven, White Castle and others - basically, any time a company gives you a hard-sell to order via its apps rather than its storefronts or its website, you should assume you're getting twiddled, hard.
33/
18+ pluralistic, For example, Plexure boasts that it can predict what day a given customer is getting paid on and use that information to raise prices on all the goods the customer shops for on that day, on the assumption that you're willing to pay more when you've got a healthy bank balance.

evan, Tomorrow I'll be participating in a webinar on #privacy and the #fediverse organized by Privacy Laws and Business. I think it's an important issue -- I hope we spend more time talking about this topic.

techviator, Since Microsoft seems to not care about the #Privacy impact that the #Copilot+ #Recall feature has, I am going back to #Linux as my daily driver. All my #Homelab servers run on Debian or its derivatives, work servers run RedHat or Windows, but I have not used a Desktop Linux for quite a while as a daily driver. I've been playing with Debian 12 with Gnome for the past few days, and next I'll be playing with Fedora, which I have not used since the early 2000's. We'll see how fast I can catch up.
techviator, BTW, since I work mostly in #VR using #Immersed, that is one of the first things I tested, and I got to say, their work to support multiple virtual monitors with #Wayland+#Gnome has really paid off, it works flawlessly in Debian! I need to test it in Fedora in the next few days. Can't wait for my #Visor to arrive. #WorkInVR #Immersenary
techviator, It seems #Microsoft is making important changes to #Copilot #Recall that should improve its #privacy:
- Opt-in instead of opt-out.
- Windows Hello must be used to use Recall.
- Screenshots and database are encrypted and need Windows Hello authentication in order to open.
https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/7/24173499/microsoft-windows-recall-response-security-concernsI'm still switching to #Debian as my primary OS and keep #Windows as a VM for some work applications, but it's good to see that MS is trying to make this controversial feature a bit more secure.

@Vitalba @privacypride

itsfoss, @markthelost Thank you!
Nonya_Bidniss, The thing that upsets me about #Recall is that my data will be exposed by someone else, some business, using Windows. I'm not going to be using it, that's not my concern. It's that places that will use it will also have information about me that could potentially destroy my finances and identity. And is the gov't going to use it? It f'ing well better not. #privacy

jeridansky, I'm now paying 99 cents/month for iCloud+ so I can use Private Relay which (among other things) hides my IP address and only shares my country and timezone with websites I visit.
That seems to be the only way to stop The Guardian from sniffing my IP address; with Private Relay on it shows the weather for a city that's not mine. (I'm not even near Los Angeles.)
There's no real problem with The Guardian getting my IP address; it's just a super annoying invasion of privacy.
ilyess, @jeridansky While the Guardian makes it obvious that they have access to your IP address through their weather widget, they're not actually doing anything special to get it. Any website you visit has to know "your" IP address to establish a connection. So I wouldn't call it an invasion of privacy per se. However, this doesn't take away from what you're doing. Always a good move to hide one's IP address in my opinion.
human3500, What is the best non invasive / #privacy respecting #videoConferencing app these days?
Five people and a one hour call.
No AI training. No tracking. No evil corporation like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc.
Bonuses:
no need to sign up.
Decent encryption but that is less of a requirement then the operator not mining our conversation and profiling us.

hack13, So with my new found knowledge of #kagi upsetting me and causing me to leave it... The fact the only other engines that are not just proxying google or bing... Is #brave or #mojeek and while brave one is nice... I just cannot bring myself to use something that funds a biggot... Then mojeek just feels dated and not great...
I am tempted at bringing fuzzysearx back... and even look at trying to leverage the built in ability to add custom engines to look at leveraging other abilities... because searxng really seems like the only ethical way I can see to leverage search engines collecting data...
hack13, @Mojeek yeah... it just feels like I'm using AltaVista Search from the early 2000s. But I do love that you have your own index!
Mojeek, @hack13 well that's good to hear, we have done some UI stuff not that long ago, can check back in in the future. Anything in particular you would find better about the feel of us?
simplex, Protecting children's safety requires privacy and end-to-end encryption:
https://simplex.chat/blog/20240601-protecting-children-safety-requires-e2e-encryption.html
Proposed "upload moderation" would fuel the very problem it aims to solve, undermining rather than protecting children's safety.
r_alb, The European privacy community
has repeatedly pointed at the GDPR‘s sometimes slow and insufficient enforcement. And I won’t argue with that. But I‘d like you to consider that the lack of GDPR literacy and privacy awareness is at least equally problematic. Even the best enforcement mechanisms are useless when people do not know their rights. We need to do more, not only to improve enforcement, but also to better educate people on privacy matters!
