Some questions for folks in

  • Can someone point me to reliable information about German laws on regarding privacy of individuals? I imagine there are gray areas depending on how recognisable or prominently featured people are. Depending on the circumstances it's not always possible to ask them, but I wanna do things right.

  • Can you recommend photogenic but off-the-beaten-path spots in ?

Thanks!

Ever since 'Scavengers Reign' moved to I keep seeing everywhere posts raving about how mind-bendingly awesome it is, and I couldn't be happier. I really hope Netflix takes note and treats this fantastic show better than HBO did.

The Atacama Desert in has some of the darkest night skies in the world, perfect for . But it's also a very seismic area. When an hits, how do we keep our telescopes safe? We tell you all about it in this new video: https://youtu.be/y_nfFwKwmmM

Silly and very niche pun brought to you by the fact that I've started re-watching 'Fringe'.

If you wanna know what fringes are in interferometry, check this out: https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/technology/interferometry/

The more I use @phanpy the more I love it. One of my favourite features is the catch-up tool, which allows you to fetch all posts within the last X hours and rank them however you want.

Oldest first is particularly useful to catch up with folks in very different timezones. You can also rank by number of replies, boosts... even by "density" of information (denser posts: longer ones or those with multimedia content). You can even group posts by author.

What a great client!

1/4 "All those protoplanetary discs will be lost, like tears in a rain of ultraviolet photons."

Ok, it doesn't sound as cool as the actual quote, but still 😉

This tear-shaped object is a protoplanetary disc –the birthplace of planets around another star– observed with ESO's Very Large Telescope. Material from the disc is being stripped away by a bright star beyond the upper-right corner, outside of the field of view, hence this cometary shape.

2/4 This type of object is known as "proplyd", short for "protoplanetary disc", although the term is most often associated to discs being ionised by other bright nearby stars.

This particular object is called 177-341 W and is located in the Orion Nebula, as shown below. Thanks to adaptive optics we can correct atmospheric turbulence and get super sharp images!

3/4 The data was obtained with the MUSE instrument at the VLT. MUSE doesn't take images per se. Instead, it breaks the light coming from every single location within its field of view into a rainbow or spectrum, which tells us a lot about the physical properties of this object.

We can then reassemble all these spectra into thousands of images at different wavelengths: https://www.eso.org/public/videos/potw2423a/

I love book recommendation lists but they often tend to upset me. My favorite kinds of lists are either international lit (where I am usually upset that there are not enough women represented) or books by non-male folks (where I am upset that it's often mostly English-writing folks).

So: here is a list of my personal recommendations of books by women in (English) translation. One book for every day of June. Feel free to join - doesn't have to be every day!

@vicgrinberg Oooh, this sounds intriguing! I might get this (much to the chagrin of all the other books in my to-read pile...).

Soon the telescope platform at ESO's Paranal Observatory in will look very different at night: all four of the 8.2 m telescopes of the VLT will be equipped with lasers! This is one of the ongoing upgrades of the GRAVITY+ instrument, which will allow us to study black holes, stars and planets like never before.

Find out more in this great article by current and former ESO communication interns Elena Reiriz Martinez and Tom Howarth: https://www.eso.org/public/blog/gravity-leap-vlti/

@freakazoid I think Lick was one of the first (maybe the first?) observatories to have a laser guide star.
