I deeply dislike how microblogging has trained a lot of readers to call any sentence more complex than, “See Jack shitpost,” a run-on.

I'll have you know I use very long (and complicated) sentences – often with extraneous asides; full of odd punctuation – when I shitpost.

After Threads implements some mixture of AP subset + Mastodon extras, that probably becomes the de-facto Universal Federation Protocol/API, nobody will want to ship a new piece of software that doesn't Just Work with Masto & Threads.

That's phrased a bit unclearly. I assume you mean, "Once that is available, nobody will want to ship a new piece of software that doesn't work with Masto & Threads."

Printed robots with bones, ligaments, and tendons

For the first time, researchers have succeeded in printing a robotic hand with bones, ligaments and tendons made of different polymers using a new laser scanning technique. The new technology makes it possible to 3D print special plastics with elastic qualities in one go. This opens up completely new possibilities for the production of soft robotic structures.

On a recent international flight the mask-wearing percentage was visibly higher than on other flights in the past year or so.

At least half of the flight attendants were masked, which was also a change.

People are starting to understand:

a) Covid is not remotely done with us, and it really sucks to get it.

b) Masks also block flu transmission.

c) Wearing a mask is a sign of care for others, not just one's self.

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@dangillmor

I was always told the Japanese wore masks when they were sick to protect others from catching their cold.

Then I went to Japan and found out most of them actually wear masks because it's super-embarrassing in Japanese culture to be seen with a runny nose; on the level of peeing your pants.

So maybe we just need to convince everyone it's disgusting for people to see snot dripping. (Which it is.)

My answer to the baby/parachute problem:

I pull my ripcord and let the baby die.

Its god—if they exist—will know their own, so baby goes to heaven ("Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius").

If god doesn't exist—baby's trying to blackmail me, so fuck you, baby.

That's the same reply I'd give an adult evangelist who pulled this stunt: they chose to die on that hill, I didn't impose a choice on them. I admit I may be flying my ASD freak flag here.

(EDIT: It's an abortion alegory.)

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@cstross

The whole question consists of falsities and deserves no answer.

An actual Christian (as in 'follower of Christ') would never initiate such a stunt; it would be contrary to the teachings they follow. A belief-consistent question to pose would be, "There is only one parachute and the Christian baby offered it to you without condition; would you take it?"

All that said? As far as I'm concerned there are very few actual Christians in the cohort of those who label themselves as such.

This is pretty in-depth. I need to give it a serious read instead of a skim.

Unfortunately, while it exhaustively covers the features of the various tools, there's not 'conclusions' section; outside of a table showing PDM is the only tool that checks all the boxes. (Poetry comes close and is the one everybody is talking about.)

I have an older Smart TV. I've never used any of the 'smart' features and I've never connected it to a network. It works fine as a dumb screen when I select an HDMI port using the remote.

Are modern Smart TVs unable to do this?

Something that really strikes me is that there are certain policies which if we can get them adopted could unravel a lot of ideology for the better!

One I know by the term "modeshift" (thanks @notjustbikes !), that is designing our cities for more than just the car! Make other transport choices equally reasonable options, if not more so!

Another I'd posit is a Universal Basic Income. If we're not coerced into capitalism, we'll have more freedom to try other things!

This is for the young progressives out there. When I was a bit younger, I was terribly disappointed with then President Bill Clinton, who signed the hateful DOMA and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell into law. It seemed he had betrayed all of his values and the LGBTQ community that had helped get him elected. There was a part of me that said I would stand on principle and never vote for him again.

But then I remembered, voting isn’t about loving everything about your candidate. /1

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@Frances_Larina @georgetakei

The fundamental mistake here is thinking the Democrats are a liberal party, in the modern Progressive sense of the word 'liberal'.

And, yes, there are many in the party who are Progressives or even Leftists. But the party leadership is Liberal in the older sense of the word and it's policies are Center Right.

> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centre-right_politics

US politics are shifted one step to the right from much of the world. We just don't notice because we're soaking in it.

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@Frances_Larina @georgetakei

If you doubt what I say about 'shifted one step to the right' try talking to someone from Europe about politics some time. You'll quickly find that what is considered X here is thought of as Y there, where X and Y are:

  • Far Right – Nazi

  • Conservative – Far Right

  • Liberal – Center

  • Socialist – Liberal

  • Communist – Socialist

And, from there, your European friend will disambiguate actual Communists from 'Tankies'. And you probably never heard of Tankies.

And, while I do see Biden out there doing the picket line thing, I don't see him complaining that milk and egg prices are high at the store and low at the farm, and what's up with that?

It's based on Matrix.

Note that right now Matrix does not support – it uses it's own federation protocol. A quick search for protocol bridges didn't turn up anything useful.
