Confused about VLANs. If my eth0's MTU is 1500, and eth0.200 VLAN's MTU is 1500, how can I icmp ping over vlan 200 with 1472 bytes of payload? That sums up to the VLAN MTU nicely, but that'd be over the parent interface limit, no? What's happening in here?

Edit: I do have "don't fragment" bit set, too.

@kkarhan @T_X @jpl sure, but I expected that if a specific switch has jumbo frames off it will drop every frame that's past 1500 bytes. Apparently, it's a tiny bit more than that.

@farcaller @T_X @jpl if it's a managed switch (I assume it is) it does also respect added-on VLAM-Tagging done by Switches, so it does account for that functionality in order to not brick the switching functionality in that conflict case...

And/ir it's Jumbo Frame setting may be for 9000-65536 byte sized Frames...

@1password sent a newsletter about "You can disable passkeys in your organisation" - can someone explain like I'm 5 to me, why I (don't) want this?

tobsen,
@tobsen@chaos.social avatar

@Schrank Heard about Passkeys in multiple podcasts. The only issue the had was exporting them to other managers. Apple and 1Password support this. Apple also via system API.
(Recovery is an other issue, but it means more security)

@Schrank @Flyingmana “PassKey” is the marketing name for WebAuthn discoverable credentials (formerly known as resident keys). Any modern YubiKey supports (a limited amount of) discoverable credentials. There is also software based support for PassKeys that use your operating system’s keyring, e.g. you Android screen lock or Apple’s fingerprint reader.

Can anyone why Play Services updates aren't included in the system updates? Along that same line, why am I never notified that there are system, Play Services, or even app updates, and only by manually checking can I see/install them? Apple used to have a similar issue, but they seem to have gotten their shit together now, at least on my work phone and my friends' devices.

@secbox

services are separate from the install. Android is an operating system that you can actually download and extend. This base version doesn't include GooglePlay services.

Imagine it like clean and then versions of Linux made for a specific service like a server. The base layer is the same. The Mastodon image just has some stuff pre-installed.

So, the Linux and Mastodon code will be updated separately.

As for why you need to manually check for updates. Well, that's easy. That's just bad design and implementation by , as we've come to expect from them by now.

ELI5: What is a "Server Load"?

I’ve heard of this concept multiple times throughout my time on the internet, but I never understood what causes a “server load”. Now that I’m in one of the biggest instances on Lemmy, this is one of the significant issues that we face. So what is a “server load”, why does it slow down websites instead of stopping...

WTF is going on at @Posit ?

@coolbutuseless @Posit

My entirely uninformed guess is that they got a new VC sugar daddy, who is now steering the ship

@coolbutuseless

Honestly, @Posit should have prepared a public statement prior to laying off so many wonderful members of our community, in line with their own values and standards as a public benefit corporation.

They certainly aren’t meeting the highest standards of social performance, transparency, and accountability to stakeholders with their ongoing silence on the issue.

Fizix,

ELI5 Why do companies put sucralose in products that already have sugar?

leds,

The first ingredient on the label is what a product it mostly made off, by using different types of sugars it will no have to be the first ingredient.

zoe,

off topic: popular subs of reddit coming together in the fediverse after using sync:eli5@kbin.social;antiwork@lemmy.world…so on and so forth

connect could have achieved the same result but somehow can’t allow subbing to kbin communities

hope future apps make this a no-brainer
