Weight Lifting

Not CW'ing this as it's a bit of a .

Always squat in a rack, kids! I just fell with 276 on my back. If I had been raw-dogging it or just using squat stands, I'd be in a world of hurt. Instead the safeties caught me and nothing was injured but my pride.

(Also, maybe don't try to switch between low-bar and high-bar mid set. I'm pretty sure that's why I lost my balance in the first place.)

Any thought on what to do for a 100 meter farms carry when you don’t have 100 meters available for walking? Walk in place for 60 seconds?

It is 24f/ -4c, and I am delicate

@WTL I could go up and down a small flight of stairs a few times

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@bomkatt Three lunges of space … I can see the issue with a hundred metres. Going up and down stairs with weights feels unsafe to me, but I can understand the problem.

If your 2024 goals include going to the gym more, Victoria's Secret is currently having some good sales; buy a sports bra/get free leggings, or one model of sport bra is $15 (these suckers can be $50 each so GOOD deal)

CharleneTeglia,
@CharleneTeglia@mastodon.social avatar

@Lizette603_23 LOL. We have 4 Ragdolls and the 2 volunteer ferals outside in the garden, but if I don't go the gym I have back problems, leg problems, injury prone, sleep problems. Alas.

CharleneTeglia,
@CharleneTeglia@mastodon.social avatar

@Lizette603_23 Yoga is fabulous. I keep my mat rolled out!

pseudoramble,

Dang, gotta wait an entire week for my new shoes. Also it's amazing that only having to wait a week is "rough" now. There was a time not terribly long ago that a week was great. Sometimes I wonder if life would improve in a lot of ways if we went back to that being more the norm too.

starshaped,
@starshaped@labyrinth.social avatar

@pseudoramble I don't have Prime so I'm always waiting a little bit longer for things when they ship. I do like that and I wish it would be the norm again too.

bomkatt,
@bomkatt@ohai.social avatar

Today’s workout was the kind where you try to do overhead squats, drop weight to get through low reps, and wind up doing relaxing yoga instead of finishing the last set.

I did not have it today. Some days are just like that

#StrengthTraining #weightlifting #Splat

sergeant,
@sergeant@qoto.org avatar

@bomkatt I skipped it all together.
Gonna give it another try today.

wheeljack,
@wheeljack@retro.pizza avatar

I hate how quickly I lose deadlift strength. I've been doing a lot of cycling and dancing, so I haven't been hitting legs with the weights, and it -shows-.

wheeljack,
@wheeljack@retro.pizza avatar

@heyfluxay It's funny, I watch other people's PR vids and they're STOKED. Me, I'm like, yep, bar moved, coolio, <yawn> 😂

Indoor cycling chased with #PushUp program. I could feel my core and lats having opinions on many of these.

3 Rounds
10 e/s Tricep Kick Backs
10 Dumbbell Pull Overs
10 Push Up Negatives

2 Rounds
:20 Bottom Up Push Up Hold
10 Plank Transitions

@bomkatt Impressive!
I do no pushups or plank on weekends to try and give myself a break.

CommissarBas,

@jorijn yeah. I ran 10ks 2 years ago, but I injured my knee. I do miss it, but I lift weights now which is also nice to do

My routine was all messed up because of the power outage this morning. Turns out that my wife thinks it is a bad idea to squat and deadlift in a pitch black basement.

I was able to squeeze 75-80% of it in this afternoon between meetings and I’ll take that as a win. Heavier weight, fewer reps, but never skip !

brian,
@brian@hoosier.social avatar

@TruthSandwich

Or glow sticks! I could pretend that my moving, sweating, and stinking is because I’m at the worst rave ever.

TruthSandwich,

@brian

Now I’m going to quit my day job and invest all of my savings into a new business that’s sure to succeed: Heavy Light Belts.

They’re weightlifting belts with a built-in flashlight so that you can exercise even when the power’s out. Obviously, everyone needs one of these, even people who don’t lift.

jjf,

I hit 1,000 workouts in https://strong.app today 😱

I started using it in May 2017 because of a @caseynewton recommendation, about 14 months after I'd first started . Would not be here today without it!

caseynewton,
@caseynewton@mastodon.social avatar

@jjf whoa, congratulations!

jjf,

@caseynewton Thanks!

ianames,

Off to Port Talbot to watch my teemage daughter lift heavier things than I can

ianames,

The only thing I know about Port Talbot is that the steelworks at night inspired the opening scenes of Blade runner.

ianames,

@gilesdring I haven't read it myself but apparently Ridley Scott said it was inspriaration in Future Noir, the making of blade runner by Paul Salmon. I want to read it now!

lydiaschoch,
@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social avatar

@starbreaker Good for you! I don’t go to a gym. It’s so much cheaper to buy some weights and learn some bodyweight exercises.

starbreaker,

@lydiaschoch I needed an excuse to get out of the house, and I wanted to shake up my routine. Going to a local gym allowed me to get a few sessions with a trainer to learn the lifts I wanted to do (squats, etc.) and make sure I was doing them properly for the sake of my wife's peace of mind. She was afraid I'd injure myself.

artcollisions,
@artcollisions@vis.social avatar

Strength:
3X1 95% 1RM deadlift (205 lbs)

metcon:
40 air squats
20 hanging knee raises
30 cals on the rower
20 hanging knee raises
40 air squats

tc: 16 minutes (I finished in 13)

Can someone tell me how 205 three times is not a PR (according to the gym's calculator when my 1RM is 216?).

(Also, if you think this is just bananapants crazy, please tell me. Apparently I have no idea what a sane workout looks like any more.)

recursive,
@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

@artcollisions
Yeah, you should definitely do what you can comfortably recover from. If you're getting hurt or having difficulty recovering before your next workout, it's certainly too much. I think lots of protein has helped me somewhat?

The biggest limitation I've noticed at my age (45) is that I need to be really careful not to increase either the weight or volume too quickly, good record keeping has helped me a lot with that.

recursive,
@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

@artcollisions hmm, for me lately I'm at about 0.8 gram protein / pound bodyweight.

Are they having you do mostly pretty high intensity low volume strength training sets? That's pretty hard to do all the time, really useful to get in some 7-10 rep range sets too.

Also, warmup sets? I used to just do my general warmup/mobility stuff, but I feel like I hurt myself a lot less if I do 2-3 warmup sets gradually going up toward 90% of the "working" set

pmpafterdark,

Today's workout
Week one / Day one of new program
3 Sun Salutations / Padma Sadhana
Shoulder conditioning
Air squats
Barbell Back Squat 1x5 to 275 lb
Barbell Back Squat 5x5 @ 248 lb
Hang Power Snatch 4x4 at 45 lb

CharleneTeglia,
@CharleneTeglia@mastodon.social avatar

RXBar: I tried it, I liked it! Protein bars are a real mixed bag, often too gritty or sticky or just otherwise unpleasant in texture. This one is a winner. (Yes I resort to bars and powders, it is way easier to consume 40g of carbs than it is 40g of protein and there's a limit to how much chicken/broccoli/rice one can eat)

chx,

@CharleneTeglia tangential but when I hear some food is gritty I think of https://youtu.be/1XT-SQ2DPyk :D

CharleneTeglia,
@CharleneTeglia@mastodon.social avatar

@chx Marmalade is much better than grit!

markw,
@markw@mstdn.social avatar

When other folks share their PRs, I notice they often don't share the weight they lifted: if you've done this, what's your reason?

@weightlifting

pseudoramble,

@markw I don't see a ton of activity on Mastodon about PR's, but the ones I do see tend to include weights?

One argument I could see for avoiding it is to try and avoid making unfair comparisons. It can be easy to get lost in the "my numbers should be X but I'm only getting .8X" and seeing others pushing past could be stressful.

brian,
@brian@hoosier.social avatar

My wife insisted that it was time to retire the shoes I use for . We’ve been through some things together, old friends. Rest easy.

pmpafterdark,

Today's workout
Deadlift test
Shoulder conditioning
10 air squats
1x1 Barbell Deadlift to 315 lbs
Woooo! Three Plates!! First time in a year.

pseudoramble,

@pmpafterdark bruh. Awesome! I gotta keep up! I'm gonna fall behind quick.

How often do you test? Every other cycle?

pmpafterdark,

@pseudoramble every 6 weeks

pseudoramble,

Workout tonight:

Back Squats: warm ups, 1x6 @ 285lbs (82% 1rm), 4x6 @ 255lbs (75% 1rm)
Rack pulls: 4x6 @ 285lbs
Barbell rows: 4x14 @ 135lbs.

Similar to last week. I was feeling much more stiff and a bit more tired than last squat session, so I stayed back from 85% 1rm. I threw on knee sleeves for the high end set. That helped let me get loosened up and a bit more confident mentally for the rest of the workout.

Knee sleeves are too magical.

pseudoramble,

@StinkyPinky Thanks! Not sure if you're saying you can't do heavy weights in jest, but, I genuinely believe people can start pushing heavy weights again if they want to and are physically capable of the movements still. Would take some deliberate effort, but there are tons of amazing lifters north of 40. I'm also mid-30's, so fairly young, but not exactly early 20's either. So I think it's there!

pmpafterdark,

@pseudoramble
Nice! Way to go

I know it is tacky to post but I’m proud of myself. 48 in a couple of weeks and eatin’ cookies on set 6.
