All things flight sim

david_megginson,

More from the open-source flight simulator: a TCA DC-3 approaching the Northumberland Strait, enroute from Moncton, NB (CYQM) to Charlottetown, PE (CYYG).

james,

MS flight sim. Standard or super deluxe? Bearing in mind LHR is/was our home airport for the first 20+ years of my life. #flightsim

james,

@GossiTheDog Yes, but the authentic full Heathrow experience is apparently only an add on included in the deluxe version? Presumably the runways are there on the basic one.. which is probably enough?

One of the things my #XPlane #flightsim never got right in my opinion was the brightness of landing lights. They have always been very dim, and at night you do not see the runway until damned near over the numbers.

Last night I finally found the settings for this and tweaked my usual #Cessna 172SP so now it has very wide and bright landing lights. Not real-world, but I can see the whole runway now.

@Av8rdan Especially before LED landing lights! The first time I landed the Cherokee 140 with one GE incandescent bulb in the nose I was surprised at how much I couldn't see until I was coming over the numbers.

@machias Copy that. By the time I sold my Cherokee 235, I had switched to one LED landing light on the nose and it was much better. Also, I was eating incadescent landing lights, some lasting as long as 5-10 hours of use. I tried to remember to only use it in the pattern at night or on approach, but am guilty of taking off at night and forgetting to turn it off a few times, so I went thru them pretty regularly.

SharkaBytes,

Put Yourself In the Pilot's Seat with FLIGHT SIMULATOR II.

I love the whole aesthetic of this ad, a whole polygon world around you.

It wasn't until Flight Simulator 98 that I'd get my first taste of the series, so it's always a fascinating experience to go back to these early entries from SubLogic.

blakespot,

@SharkaBytes I made this ~15 years ago re: Flight Simulator II and X. Long before the recent FS2020, but still cool, I think. 🙂

Should I buy MSFS or X-Plane 12?

Now that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has been announced, it seems like there is no point in buying MSFS (2020).

Both simulators are on sale right now, and I'm considering getting X-Plane 12 while waiting for MSFS 2024 to come out, just to have something that lasts a bit longer before being outdated.

What do you guys think?

Javipz,

@fell seems that fs2024 could be just and update of 2020 with a season pass module with missions like firefighting, pest control, mountain rescue and more roleplaying.

ke7zum,

I'm new here. An intro

My name is Sarah Alawami. I reside in the USA. I really love flight simulation. I use FlightSim 2020 and can't wait to see what is on the horizon regarding that.

I spoke at FSX in 2021 regarding how I fly. You see, I'm totally blind. I use a tool called talking flight monitor along with the pmdg aircraft to take part in this hobby. My goal is to educate and advocate as well as aviate and and communicate. I want more developers to be aware of us to make their software usable and inclusive toward the blind and visually impaired community. I run a discord server where all of this is discussed.

I'm also studying to be a vatsim controller. There are some obstacles which I hope will be worked around so I may do my job more efficiently. I want to speak at the next flight sim expo (not this one) about how I can control while completely blind, again to educate both devs and other visually impaired folks that just because they are blind does not mean they can never fly. My goal is to one day be a pilot and get my GA at least, maybe my commercial if I live long enough. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I will not bite. Follow my journey on mastodon and visit my website which I need to update as I don't use prepared anymore. Lol!
