Hey, I just wanted to say I really like the icon of /kbin and I really special that the dev has done so far. I really hope /kbin keeps evolving because it's the only thing I've seen in the last 11 years that could replace Reddit for me.
Took me forever to figure out how to get to this magazine page to post this post (ended up going to my profile and looking through my subscriptions. No idea how to post somewhere I haven’t already subscribed to)….and another forever to find out how to add a post (that little plus sign beside the magnifying glass in the nav bar). Painful. I am now several hundred years old and will log off and take a nap.
This might be a bit long, so the tl;dr is that I'm happy of moving out from something going rotten, and I am optimisting on this all "fediverse" concept, so I am giving ideas on how to improve.
1.The whole concept of fediverse is still quite unknown to me, but I think it's positive to be able to somehow link different platforms dedicated to different uses, managed differently and used by different "personas"...
2. I would not take the experience from previous "prisons" on social media as something to pursue here, but check the concept and use to improve what we share, with who we share it, and also what we consume. Don't look in the rearview mirror, look to the windshield...
3. There will be of course "growing pains" where somehow fringe platforms suddenly got a serious uptick in popularity and use do to others' incompetence. You will have good and bad experiences, speak up and figure out how you can help improve everyone's experience.
That said, it would be nice to:
Have a way to explore the magazines in a tile wall, that you could explore via e.g. tags - you search the tag "science" or "manga" and you get a wall of tiles with the name of the magazine and e..g. the language, country/region or rate of publications.
Have a separation between what are essentially text posts vs. "memes" or pic posts, where those are presented on the feed with different aspect of the tile.
That's for 2 days of browsing, I guess most people here will have a "cake day" around 12th June? 😁
On #lemmy the first page is usually set on "local" and to see the federated content you have to switch to "all".
On #kbin it's (often?) the opposite. To switch to local content, select "Federation status: OFF" in the sidebar (federation icon, near the settings one).
Now that federation is enabled, I'm trying to connect to my Pleroma account @missingno, but searching for it 404s. If I search my kbin account from that server, it does show up, but gets stuck on Follow Requested. Is there any way to force discovery?
Is there any way to hide upvoted or previously visited posts? I find myself running into the same group of posts a lot and would like to be able to automatically filter those out somehow.
Dunno if this is better suited to the codeberg page, but is there any scope for including a 'favourited' tab on profiles? I've "upvoted" quite a few posts and comments, but notice I only have a history of things I've 'boosted'.
I understand that a boost is essentially an upvote, whereas a favourite is more like a 'like', but if that's the intended purpose, should we not have a history of favourited items? Especially given the term, if we're going back to when browser bookmarks literally used to be called favourites, it would be nice to see everything we've favourited.
Question: I was wanting to mess around with some local client (i/mac os) development and was wondering how to authenticate with the kbin instance? I read for activity pub, most fedi servers should use OAuth 2.0; but I'm not sure what url/endpoint to point to and the documentation I found doesn't have anything about authorization. The documentation I found was here at: https://docs.kbin.pub/.
I keep hearing that if you have log-in on kbin, you can access stuff in other places, such as lemmy. But, if I wind up on a lemmy instance it asks me to log-in and my kbin log-in doesn't work. So do I need to create separate log-ins on lemmy, mastodon, and so on?
Since everyone is joining kbin.social can I just host my own kbin server on my homelab? Does that help? Should I get others to join it? Im so new to this but it seems exciting. If I self host.. how do I find other content I want to look at? Is there an activityPub search or some such?
Context: I signed up for kbin using my Google account on desktop, but don't want to do the same in my mobile browser. I don't know my current password so I can't set one up in account settings.
Is there a way to view a magazine from all instances im subscribed to? Like I want to view the gaming magazine from both kbin and lemmy or whatever else.
