EnglishMobster, @ernest - are you able to share the financials of how much it costs to run #kbin?
A group of Reddit mods are considering moving their communities to a Lemmy/Kbin instance but we're wondering how much we'd need to invest to get it up to a reasonable scale.
We crunched the numbers based on Beehaw's transparency report and arrived at Lemmy costing about $0.05/user/month USD but AFAIK there's nowhere to check how much Kbin would cost per user.
ernest, I have increased the server parameters a bit. If there are still issues, there is still the option of an upgrade but still... it's a budget VPS, and it requires a few minutes of downtime for the website. I'll keep an eye on it, and I apologize for the unexpected interruption. I have temporarily disabled upvotes and boosts auto-refresh as well. I will check how much it will relieve the server.
jdp23, @ernest if you can handle it financially, my advice is to do a maor upgrade now -- and in any case, post some contribution links so that people can help out.
kbin's getting enough buzz that you're going to get a LOT of interest over the next few days so you might as well try to get ahead of the curve.
simple, @ernest If you're planning on opening donations for server hosting now might be the time, lots of people coming in from Reddit and I'm getting a lot of error 500s. Good luck in the upcoming storm.
Hello, been using kbin for the past couple hours. Really impressed with a lot of the UI, but running in to a few issues. The one that is sticking out to me is being able to only see posts the magazines that I am subscribed to....
danke, Are users able to block entire instances, including users from that instance? I'm able to block
lemmy.ml
as a domain to remove their self posts but I'd like to block their users as well.
cache_miss, (edited ) I'm seeing a 500 server error when using the single quote character (') in the search box. Anyone else having this issue? I searched the codeberg issue tracker and didn't see anything there yet, but I could've missed it.
Edit: Created issue here
Is this a known issue? I haven't gotten any notifications when people replied to my comments or posts.
maxrebo, How does one change their profile picture? I also want to be pretty :) love kbin so far, still learning
ernest, @maxrebo absolutely adorable! ;)
trent, just figured this out lol :P you should probably include it when viewing your /u/ page. Would you accept a PR?
gunnervi, is there a way to delete a magazine I created, or make it private/hidden/something equivalent? I made it as a test to try to understand how this platform works but I don't actually want the responsibility of managing a magazine and I don't want to steal the name from someone who might actually do something with it
dannekrose, @gunnervi Huh. I just noticed there doesn't seem to be any straightforward way to delete a magazine. Maybe I'm missing something somewhere, but I couldn't find anything immediately obvious.
solarhalfbread, @gunnervi I'd like to know as well. Accidentally created a magazine with the wrong name (thanks autocorrect) 😕
Many might not know, but the developers of Lemmy are communist tankies - and i'm not joking - that spread propagranda and misinformation. They for example deny the genocide of the Uighurs in China as it is a "hoax perpetated by the western propagandists"....
MothraCultist, (edited ) So I deleted a post I made to /m/Tardigrades as I attached the wrong image and now I get 500 server error for both that magazine and my profile page, I can see other kbin magazines & profiles just fine. Is it just a me thing or did I break them (oops) it is same deal when I check on private browser
MothraCultist, @ernest awesome, thanks for all your hard work! :D
ernest, @dannekrose This is related to Redis (database cache layer) actually. I suspect it's due to today's update. In the database, the avatar field was null, but the cache layer still held the association.
cogwheel, A couple of questions:
What is the difference between creating a post, an article, a photo, etc? Is it just a different interface for creating it, or is there some deeper technical difference?
What happens if you don't select a magazine when creating?
Let's say I want to follow friends on Pleroma/soapbox instances, is there a place in the interface where I can see and interact with a feed of non lemmy/kbin posts?
Thanks!
Thanks to @dansup, kbin stats are now supported.
Maybe...
sickday, Are there any decent mobile apps for android for viewing kbin? If it's possible to avoid using a browser app to view kbin, I'd love to explore that route.
Hi everyone, You may have noticed a small change on the website. From now on, upvotes work just like on Lemmy - they are equivalent to Mastodon's "favourite." You can boost a post using the button that replaced "favourite." Another change is that you can now rate and boost your own posts. Boosting has a one-time effect - it...
On Lemmy, comments are not truly deleted, but hidden for all except instance admins. Also, deleted comments will still be present (they just say something to the affect of "deleted by user") and still show the poster's username even after the poster's account is deleted....
kjr, Kbin magazines in the Fediverse/Mastodon - some issues
I have started a magazin here and made a couple of tests in Mastodon. Most important features works well: Mastodon users can subscribe und get the threads and micro-blob posts and they can post in the magazin. But there are a couple of issues:
- After the usr subscribes the magazin, she/he gets the posts. But when she opens the account of the magazin though her/his mastodon account, the user sees only an empty account instead to see all the post since date of subscription like in a.gup.pe
- If the subscribed mastodon user clicks on the hashtags, she/he doest get the posts/threads published in the magazin. Only posts in Mastodon and othe microblogging plattforms.
- When the user receives the posts of the magazin, there is not indication in the post that they come from the magazin. For instance in a.gup.pe the user sees that the group boosted it. But OK, maybe it doesn't have a solution, and it is not really a bit issue.
ah, just making some propaganda :)
the magazin I have started is about plant/vegan milk, mostly focus in DIY
https://kbin.social/m/plant_milk
MothraCultist, Probably a silly question, but what is the checkbox marked "OC" for when adding a new article/link/etc? I thought it was maybe to mark Original Content (like for if I personally drew a picture and posted it, as opposed to linking to someone else's work) but I could be wrong and don't want to use it incorrectly! Thank you!
Swyperider, @MothraCultist Yeah that OC is for Original Content. How you described it is what it is used for :D
MothraCultist, @Swyperider ahh awesome thank you so much!! :D my other guess was optical character but that made way less sense to me!
Hello,...
DarraignTheSane, How do you search for Lemmy communities here on Kbin, if they don't show up in the "Magazines" search? I know that on Lemmy if you use the full Lemmy community syntax (!community_name) to search for a community on another server, your Lemmy server will go out and index that community and then it will show up in the search results a few minutes later.
Is there a specific syntax to use when searching for Lemmy communities that aren't already populated on Kbin?
fruitywelsh, Following this post, because that is one of the things I don't understand on kbin either.
themadcodger, @DarraignTheSane if I understand you correctly, search for
@community(or user)@servername
and you can follow it/them there.
sirvalkyerie, I run into a 500 error when trying to add moderators to my magazine. I didn't see it mentioned in the documentation, is that actually a feature that's not yet available?
dannekrose, @sirvalkyerie Are you adding moderators with accounts on your own instance or trying to add accounts from other instances?
sirvalkyerie, nevermind! usernames are case sensitive? I didn't realize that. It's all good now! Thanks for the help
What's the best way for us to chip in and help fund Kbin's development or the hosting costs for kbin.social?
Hey all - just started using kbin today as I'm not 100% happy with Lemmy and really enjoying it so far. I also use Mastadon a fair bit, and it'd be awesome to just use kbin for all my social media needs going forward, but I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a way to follow hashtags on the microblogging portion of the site...
Blind redditors, and others who use assistive technology, rely on third-party apps so are looking around for alternatives. Is /kbin currently a good match for them?
