kuihmuih, When I'm not working or art-ing, I'm exploring my home in #SouthEastAsia . Some pics I took while #Kayaking in #Malaysia
slothrop, Found a pic of me from last year, absolutely shitting myself
River, @slothrop Yeah Piranha has their own factory, as does Dagger Europe, Waka comes out of the same factory as Exo in Italy Drago Rossi is Eurotank, Spade is Exo too isn't it? I thought Zet had their own plant in Czech? Lettmann definitely has their own factory & prijon has always been next level! The Bliss-Stick factory was basically home made, I did the carpentery on the old collapsed wool shed that was converted, the oven was super basic but fine for short boats, but too small for modern boats.
River, @slothrop Then there was the old Necky factory in Czech that used to make Waka when they first came out in Europe. The Exo oven is a really nice machine, I'm kinda surprised there are quality problems coming out of there. Kenny from Waka reckons he has only had a handful of broken boats since they moved production there. But with that much production coming out of one plant, it will be going hard and thats where problems creep in.
slothrop,
kayakpatrick,
msquebanh, @kayakpatrick Dragon boating is really fun but so different than other paddle sports I've done. I think outrigger is more for me.
msquebanh, @kayakpatrick Here's my slideshow from our first race day

mikaylamic, It was a beautiful day for kayaking today
Another view of the shore. The trees cover the shore line except for one spot with a large rock rising right out of the water. There is a tree-covered hill in the distance. The sky is blue, with a few wispy white clouds. The lake is reflecting the rock, trees, and sky. The front of my kayak is visible in the bottom of the photo
A close up look at a path of clear water in a part of the lake that is full of tall cattails. The water is completely still, and reflects the cattails and the sky. The cattails are so tall that you can’t see the shore. The end of my paddle is visible in the bottom center of the picture, and I was passing this going perpendicular to the path of clear water between the cattails
The cattails that grow along the edges of the lake are visible on both sides of the picture, with clear water in front, but it is much more open than the previous picture. The shore is visible in the distance. The sky is blue, with wispier clouds overhead, and big white ones to the left, which are reflecting clearly onto the lake
mikaylamic, @ClH2OArs They reduce the water level for the lake significantly during the winter (the entire area I kayaked today will have no water), and you can see all the old tree stumps sticking up through the ice.
ClH2OArs, @mikaylamic oooh. That's a different kind of cool, really
slothrop, I have a new kayaking knife!
IzzyChambers, @slothrop What happened to the old one? Or is this your first?
tomo, @slothrop How does the lock work? Is it enough to pull hard or you need to squeeze those thingies in the middle?
koalie, The fact that #whitewater #kayaking exists implies there might be #blackwater kayaking. Is that correct and if so how scary is it?
koalie,
BilboSwaggins, We have blackwater kayaking in Bavaria, some of our rivers run from swamps and the water color is a deep brown/amber. Makes for pretty tricky water when it gets shallow as you don't see the stones in it.
mbskis, Lovely afternoon on the water. #kayaking #kayak #outside #optoutside #nature #water #stateparks #Massachusetts

slothrop, I just sold my Pyranha Ripper #whitewater #kayak yesterday!
It was my main boat for the last three years. I had many great runs in it.
It’s amazing I got the price for it that I did, given that i learned rocksplatting in that boat 😂😂😂
So while I’m a little sad, I now have to go and find a new kayak.
snij22, @slothrop firecracker???
snij22, @slothrop no replace it with a firecracker- keep the splatting going!!
cjonthehudson,
cjonthehudson, @dancinyogi It was very pleasant. Looking forward to a trip back home in a month where there are lakes, something PA is sadly lacking in.
dancinyogi, @cjonthehudson Very true. Enjoy it while you can.
cjonthehudson, When we moved to southeast #Pennsylvania from #UpstateNewYork, we were dismayed by the lack of lakes. Why the glaciers hated PA, we don't know, but they sure didn't leave many lakes behind, reservoirs for paddling are few, and flatwater stretches of river are scarce. But, we finally went up to "Lake" Nockamixon yesterday, and found a lovely stretch of #paddling.
A photograph of a kayak paddler at the edge of a very dense field of pond lilies. She is facing away from the viewer, yellow-bladed paddle resting across the boat, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, the boat pointing toward the lilies. Beyond the edge of the lilies there is a line of trees.
Underneath a bridge, extensively painted graffiti that says, among other things, "Learn to Love" and "Bliss", reflected in the still water below.
cjonthehudson, @dancinyogi It's about an hour for us, but for paddling it was worth it.
dancinyogi, @cjonthehudson It is beautiful. It's about 40 minutes from me now. Sadly, I'll probably move further away when I find a new place.
bryanhansel, Wetsuit vs. Drysuit for Kayaking
https://www.paddlinglight.com/articles/wetsuit-vs-drysuit-for-paddling/
TimKStanton, @bryanhansel Thank you-- I'll give this a more careful read later. Very important topic. I've experimented in my wet suit (with several layers of neoprene) in local waters with temps in the 30's. Worked well. But, boating on a warm day but with cold water (such in the spring) can be very deceptive.
sparkman, @bryanhansel Great article. I mostly canoe in Canada and occasionally kayak. I’ve pretty much shifted to only using a (Kokatat) drysuit even on very warm days. I layer for long immersion and if I get too hot, I just go into the water to cool off. That’s also a good way to check for leaks. I’ve not experienced a catastrophic failure, but Kokatat replace the gaskets pro-actively about once every 5-7 years.
jimfl, Got one in before the atmospheric river shows up. The currents were with us and made the home stretch mooring buoy slalom super fun. Saw sea lions, harbor seals, harbor porpoise, herons, eagles, and osprey.
kayakpatrick, @jimfl bouy slalom sounds like a blast
jimfl, @kayakpatrick Wonder where I learned that!
Bonus: Spot the NWOC sticker in the photo
KissAnne, Finnish
jimfl, @KissAnne There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.
Also, paddling in the rain can be amazing, as long as the rain is coming straight down, and you have a waterproof hat.
aktbar,
kayakpatrick, Harbor seal visit during a class a few weeks ago. #kayaking #kayak #paddling #Photomonday
cenbe, @kayakpatrick What's the thing with a red handle that looks like a giant water pistol?
kayakpatrick, @cenbe that's a bilge pump for getting water out of the kayak. Works very well as a water gun.
debs829, I was asked to photograph #kitesurfing
I usually #photograph #whitewater #sports
It was cold and #windy and a blast watching these people fly!
#ChesapeakeBay #baybridge #silentsunday
dannotdaniel, @debs829 amazing 🤩
Love that you got the bridge in there too.
A wide angle would be interesting, but harder.. I don't know how you would position yourself. But this guy would look like he was in the stratosphere 😅
debs829, @dannotdaniel loved the shots with the bridge in the background too. I have some that I took with my wide angle. Haven’t finished going through the shots. Can’t wait to get out there again! This weekend back to shooting a white water event. 🌊

ericdaryl, Got out kayaking yesterday and had a blast. It was a bit bumpy, though. Not much river in the river… #whitewater
A green kayak sits by the side of the small river
A man in kayaking gear stand next to his boat beside a river, holding his arms up in the air and joy and excitement. The hillside behind him is covered in dead trees from an old forest fire.
slothrop, @ericdaryl Looks fabulous! Though I expect that your boat has some new scratches 😖

Though I expect your boat has some new scratches 😖
slothrop, (edited ) I may just have bought a boat 🤩
UPDATE: oh noes, someone else beat me to it 😭
kokoschinsky, @slothrop congratularions :blobcatbirthday:
It's a machete?
zem, @slothrop
You will find one eventually!
ericphelps, Did an end-to-end test. Towed the kayak with my bike 5 miles to the lake, then disassembled the cart and stowed it in the kayak. Folded up the bike and bungeed it down on the rear deck. Went kayaking around the lake for a while, then reversed everything and biked back home.
It's a lot slower than putting the kayak on the car, but... I gotta say, it felt pretty awesome to head out knowing I could go anywhere there's water or a trail. And switch between them as needed.
My kayak out on Lake Natoma. Some shallow submerged rocks are on the right. The water is an unattractive greenish-brown.
The assembled kayak cart with my kayak on it. My fold-up bike is attached in the front, ready to tow the whole thing.
becha, @ericphelps That’s amazing!!! Well done!! Quite inspiring too!
Wraithe, (edited ) Ok…so after a few years of it sitting, I’m gonna pull the bag with my Kayak in it out and see how bad a shape it’s in.
And yes I said “bag and kayak”. I built a skin on frame foldable kayak back in 2013, but haven’t pulled it out in like 3 years. So…🤞it’s in ok shape.
#kayaking
Wraithe, So far the skin seems mostly fine, and the mystery of the dime sized hole in the hull (easily patchable) was solved when I pulled out one of the float bags and it had clearly been chewed on. 😂
Frame seems in good shape.
Every piece of elastic (deck webbing and frame connectors) needs to be replaced.
slothrop, Time to de-stank the #kayaking gear
18+ slothrop, Success!
Instead of the searing reek of Satan’s sweaty asscrack, the neoprene now gives off a gentle scent of chemistry and cleanliness. 😊
slothrop,
KellyandRoger, @slothrop looks like a lot of fun was had. I always loved to do kayaking and canoeing when I was younger.
slothrop, Going through some old pictures, I found this cool video of one of my kids (14yo at the time) paddling their kayak through a rapid.
Kiddo is in the purple boat, wearing a red helmet.
Whitewater kayakers paddling through a rapid on a mountain creek
slothrop, Since nobody's asking any questions, I'll just assume that fedi parents are entirely unconcerned about child safety.
