Moc, to idiotsincars in Man Gets “Trapped” In Hot Tesla After Battery Dies As He Wasn’t Aware Of Manual Release

If a passenger can’t figure out how to safety exit a vehicle, that sounds like a design problem.

WiseMoth,

Looking at the image in the article, it looks like a pretty simple latch

Moc,

Not obvious enough for a safety feature

superkret,

Yeah, it needs to be obvious to a person who hasn’t read the manual.

LazaroFilm,
@LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. Manual opening should be visible and easily used by anyone even if you don’t know how Tesla works.

Clent,

Yeah. This is pretty cut and dry.

Opening a car door from the inside shouldn’t require special knowledge. It shouldn’t require searching.

The manual release inside a trunk is easier to find.

Cars and car infrastructure is ruining various natural areas, the ones that are left, and most semi-natural ones on land. Cars and car roads are the first wounds in intact land ecosystems, they make room for infection that ruins habitats.

Do you want some reading? I have a bunch of nice peer-reviewed articles on how cars need to fuck off from wild and semi-wild areas.

Believe it or not, that’s the proper attitude. People who think they are too smart to be scammed (or scammed again) don’t keep as vigilant.

The owner of the Tesla Model 3 claims that the FSD failed to react on passing trains twice in the past six months

Well maybe your stupid ass should be paying attention to the road, especially around potential obstructions, and reducing speed when it’s fucking foggy.

otacon239,

Blame the company selling a product that doesn’t actually exist. FSD is an accident waiting to happen (and has several times). If you’re told by someone that this will keep you safer, you let your guard down over time.

I don’t agree with the people that are letting their guard down, because I personally never would, but they were taught they could. Until Tesla has to take full responsibility in every crash that happens when FSD is enabled (including moments just before), it should not be acceptable to allow the driver to relinquish control of the wheel, full stop.

brygphilomena, to enoughmuskspam in Tesla Driver Reportedly On FSD Dodges Train By Taking Control At The Last Second

Without lidar or radar and only relying on normal cameras. How well does a Tesla do in fog or other low visibility conditions?

purrtastic,

It doesn’t

Wrench,

For that matter, wouldn’t fog impact lidar?

AlotOfReading,

It does, but in less significant ways that are easier to work around.

sp3tr4l,

…Yep he finally went back on that:

theverge.com/…/tesla-lidar-luminar-elon-musk-sens…

polygon6121,

Finally they went back on that… not for the production cars, but at least for validation purposes

IphtashuFitz,

Terrible. I have a Model Y that’s “vision only” and didn’t even bother testing out FSD when Tesla enabled it recently for a free 30 day trial.

Among other things:

  • The cameras can get blinded by dirt/grime/etc. The forward facing cameras are located behind the rear view mirror where the windshield wipers can reach, but having the auto wipers turn on when it’s a clear sunny day is annoying. And if it’s something like bird poop then the wipers just smear it everywhere.
  • I fairly regularly get notifications when the sun is low in the sky, or during winter months when road grime kicks up, that one or more side cameras is blinded. Not much you can do about solar glare, and you’d have to stop and get out to clean them if it’s not solar glare.
  • The cameras also control automatic high beams, which are required for either autopilot or FSD at night. The auto high beams are terrible at detecting oncoming traffic and can flash/blind other drivers very easily. Because of this I haven’t used cruise control at night in over two years now.

That side window not even cracked tho.

But seriously, a huge point these articles never seem to include is whether the photo is before or after rescuers pried it apart to get the people out. I’ve been fooled before by horrible accident damage that was just “jaws of life”

barsquid,

Yeah I don’t see the “can of sardines” shit in the ditch photo. But why are these things stuck in mud and wet sand so often, I thought they were intended to go outdoors for camping? And it doesn’t look like it was rolled, so why would rescuers need to use the jaws in the first place?

AA5B,

It’s a funny image to think of, isn’t it? Needs jaws of life because stuck in mud?

glimse, to enoughmuskspam in Tesla Cybertruck Peeled Open Like A Can Of Sardines After Crashing Into A Ditch

Ok so I’m not saying it looks GOOD but…wow, this car is so much less ugly in black.

I have even less respect for people who buy the plain silver knowing this is an option.

barsquid,

I played a lot of N64 so the aesthetic is nostalgic. Unfortunately for Tesla, I don’t have enough money to buy a video game accessory at their price. For what they’re asking I’d need it to be an actual vehicle with the capability to survive a light rain.

glimse,

What about the aesthetic reminds you of N64? If it was light gray I’d definitely agree but it just looks industrial to me.

barsquid,

Just that low poly nature of it. Makes me recall a time when the main character triangle counts were just in the double digits.

glimse,

Ah fair enough, it does indeed look like it belongs in Mario 64 or something. I was only picturing the console itself for some reason

aodhsishaj,

That’s likely a wrap as there’s no paint on offer from Tesla and a clear vinyl wrap is available for I think 3k. This black wrap was likely done at a third party shop. Probably cost around a 300 to a grand depending.

Rhaedas,

A wrap probably doubles the protection from the environment (or more).

FlyingSquid,

I looked it up before commenting because I thought the same thing and it seems Tesla started offering it as an option late last year

aodhsishaj,

Huh, looks like Tesla is offering a colored wrap. I stand corrected.

That is far too expensive for a self healing wrap though. $6500 JFC

glimse,

I was a little surprised because I’ve never seen one before. I had two snarky comments lined up depending on if it was first or third party lol

While this accident would likely have severely damaged any vehicle, the sardine-can-style peeling of bodywork on the Cybertruck may be due to its unique construction. Whereas a standard body panel would have likely crumpled and deformed, the Cybertruck’s rigid stainless steel material likely wasn’t able to, and was instead ripped off the vehicle.

Aren’t “crumple zones” a thing cars are supposed to have?

AA5B,

Looks pretty crumpled and deformed to me. Are we sure the skin is not a crumple zone

barsquid,

Maybe if you are merely an auto manufacturer with decades of experience you make cars a bit beneath the standards of a manchild emerald mine beneficiary pretending to be a tech genius.

nickwitha_k,

Yeah… I’m pretty convinced that bribery was involved to get safety standards approval.

MelodiousFunk,

Only weak pansy cars have crumple zones. Back in my day, the cars were built stronger. You could run over a cat and barely feel it. Head on collision? I could drive away from those, provided the engine block didn’t end up in the passenger space. These modern cars just give up and die, and the mandatory seat belts just trap you inside instead of being safely thrown clear of the vehicle. AMERICAN STEEL! LEADED GASOLINE! I YEARN FOR THE GOOD OL DAYS!

ChowJeeBai,

Crumple zones absorb energy of a collision. Our new detachable body panels disperse it. Damn the pedestrians.
