Police and Crime in SF
There has been all kinds of news about how the "defund the police" movement and "don't stop shoplifters" laws is killing downtown San Francisco. Here is a more clear take, illuminated by cold, hard numbers.
San Francisco police stopped doing their jobs in 2020 and haven't started again. Here is a chart of traffic citations issued:
@gadlen@willowbl00 SFPD traffic stops are down very specifically because the SF police commission (the oversight board for the department) voted to stop doing stops for low-level infractions that had a history of racial bias. There is plenty of evidence to think that SFPD downed tools because they didn't like the district attorney, but traffic stops aren't one of them.

Thirty Years Ago is a Safe Space
I recently read some discussion about how nostalgia tends to focus on a period about thirty years prior. In the 80s, there was a focus on the 50s; in the 90s, a focus on the 60s; a lot of love for the 90s at the moment. This is not a particularly new idea.
