n8, What do the cool kids use these days for hardware GPG/SSH key devices?
I went off to grad school for a couple of short years & now everybody wants different key lengths & formats than when I started, but most of the search results that fall out when I look are from 2015--2018.
I'm talking USB here, not dedicated smartcards.
Not sure what to make of that. Was this a fad that's passed now? Everyone gave up and just trusts full-disk encryption to save them? Or use their smartphones?
mshiltonj, We binged the whole first season of #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding over the past couple days and totally LOVED it. Great show if you like #mystery #mysteries. Starting season 2 tonight.
courtcan, Okay, weird.
This morning I found a set of 7 keys in the back seat of my car.
They look mostly like house keys to me. Two of them might be for a storm door. There's a JR HIGH SADD "IT'S OK TO SAY NO TO DRUGS" fob attached labeled "Cellar".
I recognize nothing about any of this.
I texted spouse a picture, asking if he knows anything about these. He texted back that he does not recognize them at all.
We don't know anyone who has a cellar.
How the hell did these get in my car?!?
courtcan, (edited ) @morecowbell Oh, well if it's just you then that is a relief! 😆
lauraehall, What are your favorite examples of mundane mysteries that have been solved by or with the internet? Thinking of that classic Reply All episode about the forgotten song (https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/o2h8bx)
david_megginson, I've been thinking about inherited wealth in golden-age murder #mysteries (1920s and 30s especially).
They show the folly of the old system that was crumbling, by demonstrating how arbitrary #wealth is — it took only a bit of arsenic or a discrete shove down the stairs (rather than "good breeding" or a god-ordained social order) to change a "nobody" into a rich, respectable pillar of society.
The murderer gets caught for the sake of the plot, but they also mention that many don't.
KitMuse, I have a question for #bookstodon I've been thinking about writing #cozy #mysteries
in line with the genres I already write. However, I write for fun and for my "happy place", I'm wondering if there has to be a murder in a cozy mystery or if I could deal with other crimes and if they can be written without all the frenetic/zany side characters? Is that a different mystery subgenre?Thoughts appreciated.
likedisaster, @KitMuse @bookstodon my first thought was of jewel thieves, then the trixie belden books i had as a child -- similar to nancy drew -- where things go missing or folks behave shiftily because there are secrets but no one is ever harmed. there was also an episode of 'northern exposure' centered on a mysterious, unaddressed package arriving, which resulted in the entire town debating its contents & the moral implications of opening it; other episodes (same show) featured disappearing items, etc.
CA_Hawthorne, @KitMuse @bookstodon I've written a number of fantasy mysteries (none published yet) so I'd have to say, yes, it's possible.
I do always have a murder involved, even if it isn't central to the plot, but I see no reason why someone couldn't delve into other crimes. I've touched on antiquities theft, kidnapping, developers trying to relocate homeowners, & social issues.

SDZ, I'm still doing some summer murder reading. Here's a line from The High Window that only Chandler could write: "From 30 feet away she looked like a lot of class. From 10 feet away she looked like something made up to be seen from 30 feet away"
#RaymondChandler #WritersCommunity #Mysteries #Noir #PhilipMarlowe
SchlocklusterVideo, @SDZ That line is peak Chandler!
SDZ, @SchlocklusterVideo And of course this certainly doesn't hurt: :blobfoxcheer:
A gif of Humphrey Bogart with the crawling line: "THAT MAN BOGART!"
A gif of Lauren Bacall with the crawling line, "AND THAT WOMAN BACALL!"

Bold, intriguing, and psychologically compelling, "Penance" is a book that will stay with you always once you read it. Perfect for readers who enjoy true crime and unreliable narrators, "Penance" is a book that will leave you speechless.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper for an advanced copy on exchange for an honest review.

Thank you for reminding me of the Granta. As I have more time to read, I went to check it out here
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/apr/15/grantas-best-of-young-british-novelists-meet-the-class-of-23.A comment leapt out at me and made me smile when I realised what it meant, as my generation began w inkwells and nib pens. No judgment at all, as long as they keep writing.
"... many of them play fast and loose with form – they grew up writing with their thumbs. "
Happy reading.

wc_thats_me, I've been reading the Cork O'Connor series by author William Kent Krueger. They are classified as #mysteries or #thrillers and have Native American storylines and characters. There are 19 #books in the series with #18 being a prequel. I am enjoying this series a lot. Has anyone else read these or currently reading them? On book 15 now.

tim, @wc_thats_me hey Wilson. The best way that I’ve found to get replies about books on Mastodon is to tag @bookstodon. It’s an account that auto-boosts all posts it’s tagged in, allowing people to more easily share content with others. My guess is if you do that you’ll find someone who has read these books (which sound great, btw!).
wc_thats_me, @tim @bookstodon thanks

tabbyjones, Books of 2023: "Bad Kids" by Zijin Chen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Killer children always creep me out, but this one was done so well that I don't mind. The sinister nature and the twist and turn that this psychological thriller takes readers on will have you guessing up till the very last page. Mystery fans will immensely enjoy this one and have a hard time but enjoy guessing what crazy and creepy things will happen next.
