christianp, After I updated Ubuntu to 24.04, my PHP script to list all the HTTP servers on my PC[*] doesn't work any more. It seems that the www-data user can't use
lsof
to see device info on ports opened by my own user any more.Does anyone know if I must have previously done something to allow www-data to see processes started by my user, or is this a change since 22.04?
[*] the script is on my blog at https://checkmyworking.com/posts/2023/10/my-development-pcs-homepage-lists-all-the-servers-im-running/
4raylee, @christianp oh, oops, I can be more detailed about the options above if you like. I’ve just been answering on my phone which doesn’t lend itself to code.
christianp, @4raylee I've done that. Thanks for the hint!

vyoma, Good bye #WSL and hello #RemoteDevelopmentMachine
For quite a while now, I have relied on terminal into my Windows Subsystem for Linux on my main workstation, as my daily driver. While it works all right for most cases, there are certain compatibility issues that requires a "... in WSL" search term for documentations/issues.
Close to a month now I have been using a #Ubuntu #terminal only VM on my #homelab #Proxmox cluster. For ones who can roll this out, this seems the best approach.
vyoma, @AngryAnt @elan The reason I have not switched to Linux DE is mainly due to certain Microsoft productivity apps required for consulting work I do for corporate/enterprises.
I just need to figure out a workflow where I can switch Windows to a secondary workstation/VM and then I would switch to Linux DE.
AngryAnt,
sergi, My experience with #elementaryOS so far has not been great. After installing I had to do a bit of tinkering to install the right Nvidia drivers and be able to boot to GUI, many times the system hangs after coming back from suspend, the default terminal has some issue that makes it laggy, etc.
Considering deleting it and switching to #Ubuntu.
Any thoughts/recommendations?
I love #ArchLinux but I'm not feeling like spending hours tweaking my system, I prefer a "just works" solution right now.

WanderingInDigitalWorlds, Reading about Ubuntu and nvidia’s LLM development collaboration, it seems like none of the features will be forced on end users via software updates. It seems like an opt-in situation, for which I’m thankful. As Microsoft and other companies are going about LLM integration wrong. Forcing users to test unsafe software is a horrible strategy.
WanderingInDigitalWorlds, @jaifroid I could’ve worded my post a bit differently. My worry stems from the deep integration that Microsoft went with, without giving Home Users a direct method of fully opting in or out of said integration. Pro and Enterprise have an easier method using the Policy Editor. I can use the Registry Editor; that method tends to be rather dicy. It makes me wonder how much data they are casually using to train Copilot. The Recall feature they’re working on feels very invasive.
WanderingInDigitalWorlds, @jaifroid Without clear and easy ways to completely opt out in settings for Home Users…My visceral response is immediate discomfort and feeling that it is being forced into Windows. As Microsoft clearly could have chosen to make Copilot completely opt-in instead of opting out.

jadolg, Now I get why a lot of people don't like #snaps. #Snapcraft is superbroken outside of #Ubuntu 😕
popey, @jadolg I often leverage the launchpad build farm when I had these issues by the way. "snapcraft remote-build" is a nice way to get multiple architecture builds of stuff, using someone else's compute :D
jadolg, @popey oh I didn't know about remote-build 😍
Giving it a try now.

Now try learning another language (spoken) and repent having no clue about grammar! I've learnt more about grammar since having to learn another language, than ever in school, as contrary to some popular belief, English is not widely spoken everywhere in Europe, and without the foundation of linguistic terminology and structure, it's an uphill struggle I can tell you! (If we hadn't been forced to learn some French in school, I'd be stuffed!)

nixCraft, This quick guide makes setting up UFW on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS extremely simple. It provides step-by-step instructions for developers and sysadmins to secure their servers efficiently. 1morumotto, @nixCraft Are you using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS in production yet?
Firefishy, Ubuntu 24.04 is not a serious server operating system. Minor example: fail2ban shipped broken (missing required dependencies), Debian developer kindly created a fixed package, but 2 weeks on and no movement. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/noble/+source/fail2ban/+bug/2055114 #Ubuntu #Debian #Security
Firefishy, Ubuntu 22.04 (LTS) is also critically broken. Example: Depending on your storage configuration IO performance can be 100x worse when compared to an unpatched mainline kernel. (dsync when using mdraid 5 or 6 on NVMe)

Rocahontas, @jerojasro @nestor no, no queremos fusionar nada.
