@silmathoron@floss.social

I post mostly in English, about #sustainability, the #EnvironmentalCrisis and the #environment, #SurveillanceCapitalism, and #FLOSS.

I've an alt https://floss.social/@silmathoron where I do the same, only in French.

I tend to boost a lot, so don't hesitate to mute my boosts if you feel overwhelmed (three dots on my profile > "Hide boosts from https://floss.social/@silmathoron")

Most of my posts are automatically deleted after a year.

Anyone knows a music player on Linux than supports the format?
Preferably a @kde styled one but I'll take others.

As far as I can tell, and do not seem to support it (please let me know if that's wrong since I'd rather use one of these two).

I've seen that VLC reads it but I don't find it very satisfying as a music player.

sergi, to ubuntu
@sergi@floss.social avatar

My experience with #elementaryOS so far has not been great. After installing I had to do a bit of tinkering to install the right Nvidia drivers and be able to boot to GUI, many times the system hangs after coming back from suspend, the default terminal has some issue that makes it laggy, etc.

Considering deleting it and switching to #Ubuntu.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

I love #ArchLinux but I'm not feeling like spending hours tweaking my system, I prefer a "just works" solution right now.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@sergi
Is it recent or old hardware? If recent, you could check Fedora (only tinkering is installing coppr repo for ffmpeg), if not, Linux mint could be worth a try.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@sergi might be worth trying it with the edge iso from linux mint, then, should be good enough: https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/edge.html

There's a widespread impression that "Linux" isn't user friendly. I say if you choose the right distro & desktop... I endorse elementary OS!

Despite what some will tell you, don't need to use the commandline!

(getting this out of my system without jumping down anyone's throats)

Incidentally, I encourage recommending something more specific than "Linux" to avoid giving others choice paralysis.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz
I had limited success with elementary installs for previous Mac users... Nowadays Linux mint is my goto for people who just want something that'll let them use their computer.

Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger .

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan nice!
How difficult would it be to include the date when the person who posted joined and compute the average "Mastodon age" associated to the groups using each app?
I wonder if there couldn't be a strong confounding factor, namely that early adopters may have used other apps (as the official app was not yet available) and have different practices.
Thus, using something other that the web app or the official app could be strongly correlated with how "old" your presence on Mastodon is.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan Cool, this will be much easier than I thought, then!

One other question: how did you choose the list of apps in the highlight? Are these the top apps by numbers or is it something else?

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan ok, I was just surprised to see only Tusky in the Android apps (are there mostly US-citizens on m.s?)

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan sure, I just expected to see Fedilab or Subway tooter in the list 😉

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@ilumium why would it be bad?

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@Beaver
I don't think we need to entice them. The only reason bank apps are necessary is because they don't use standard 2FA.
What we need is to get legislators like the @EU_Commission to force them to follow standards (so we can use our own 2FA apps or keys, that have been working just fine for decades and are way more secure than some of their "2FA" implementations) and make their websites usable on a mobile browser.

Occasional remainder: individual action vs collective action is a false dichotomy!

What we need to be doing is helping our neighbours live lighter upon this earth of ours, relying less on the capitalist infrastructure. That's how we get change! Not by relying on politicians!

For instance: Have you checked if there's a Repair Cafe local to you? Which you can volunteer for?

(this is a subtoot)

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz
I mostly agree, I'd just nuance the "this is how we get change": pushing for better public policies on transportation, energy, and food is absolutely necessary (and not dichotomous either 😉)

rysiek, to random
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

I'll need to get an Akkoma account somewhere, won't I.

sigh

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@rysiek there are major limitations to this, though: many people like their community (the instance their account is on) and moving a whole community to a different server is generally not possible, which means that admins are mostly stuck on whatever software (usually Mastodon) they started with.
And most comunities are on Mastodon at the moment, meaning their is major inertia against moving to other platforms.

Hello all, I'm trying something new to get a better vision of users, what you like in the app, what you don't like and miss.

(yes, it's a survey 😶)

You can find it here: https://forms.gle/QbVhVQDnuShfvhUB9

Since it's the first time I'm doing this exercise, don't hesitate to give me any feedback about the process by itself!

Also, boosting for visibility will be highly appreciated. 🙂

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@bllgvn @sengi_app same, I cannot fill it without a google account apparently

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@sengi_app while I salute the initiative, I think using gForms is going to seriously limit its usability given the people using Sengi (and the fact that a google account is required to reply).
I think it might be best to redo it with another platform like Cryptpad or Yakforms: https://yakforms.org/pages/explore.html

A good read, though not seeing anything about reducing meat and fish consumption in a piece about "saving the planet" feels a bit weird (as it's the majority of all the non-climate impacts, plus 25-30% of the GHG emissions)

We keep in mind all your feedback on this thread:

One big enhancement that we would like to bring for 2024:

  • A mixed home timeline for all your accounts

Side note: mixed notifications timeline would be even more appreciated in my case ;)

eloquence, (edited ) to threads
@eloquence@social.coop avatar

There's a common false dichotomy about : cut them off, or leave it to user choice.

I can't speak to other software, but Mastodon offers a third option: limiting Threads. This can be done for all users of a server.

  • You can follow Threads accounts after clicking through a warning.

  • You have to manually approve followers from Threads.

Note, however, that boosted posts will continue to appear in your home timeline:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/26301#issuecomment-1868240966

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@eloquence
I'm still a bit unclear about the specific consequences of the limit in terms of what the limited instance can access... As far as I could tell, it's still allowed to access everything, so it does not do much in term of preventing Facebook to legally access people's data.
Did I miss something?
If not, that should also be made very clear to your people.

justsoup, to linuxphones
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

For the past year and a half I have been daily driving on my Oneplus 6T. Sadly, it seems that my time has been cut short due to the shuttering of 2G towers in my area. Since calling on doesn't work with 4G yet and I require being able to make calls, I am considering switching to either some random Android ROM or maybe a dumbphone without internet access.

Either way, I am sad.

(Yes, I do live in the US. How did you guess?)

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@justsoup @craftyguy I thought VoLTE was already supported on Linux mobiles (I'm fairly sure the L5 has it, thought the PinePhone had it too, but not sure).
Am I mistaken or is it a specific problem with Android-first devices?

janriemer, to rust

makes some happy screaming noise :awesome: :ferris:

will end this year with a long awaited feature that will define it's future:

We will get "async fn and return-position impl Trait in trait" ( & ).

It will be stabilized in the next version 1.75, which will be released on 28 December, 2023.

https://releases.rs/docs/1.75.0/

PR:

Thank you Rust for all of your hard work! ❤️

silmathoron,

@janriemer could you explain in layman's terms what this is about? I skimmed through the PR and related issues but I've no idea why it's such a big deal 😅

silmathoron,

@janriemer
Tanks, will have a look.
I don't know the first thing about rust and have limited knowledge about async, but this is a good occasion to dig a bit about both.
Stack vs heap already tells me a bit why it's a welcome change, though!

Question for the and communities: if I want to send some money into the development of the linux accessibility stack, are there specific organizations or people that I can donate to?

Note that I want this money to specifically fund accessibility work, so a general donation to GNOME, for instance, is not what I am looking for ;)
(of course for individual people I do not expect them to dedicate 100% of their time to accessibility).

strypey, to chat

I finally got around to testing a bunch of GNU/Linux chat apps that support the @matrix protocol. Not one of them was suitable for production use;

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/can-trisquel-11-please-replace-pidgin-21st-century-chat-client#comment-174442

... which I'm presuming means there still isn't a functional Matrix client for mobile GNU devices like the PinePhone and Librem5.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@strypey yes, that's the direction Purism is taking with their PureOS, flatpak can use any repo, it's a bit like like f-droid.
Some distros like Fedora already have their own flatpak repo https://src.fedoraproject.org/projects/flatpaks/*

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@strypey that's the beauty of it, they are both good desktop and mobile clients ;)
