People talk hard about blocking Threads because of numerous privacy issues / surveillance capitalism reasons.

but, I'm likely blocking them for much more boring reasons.... They have hundreds of TBs of storage, unlimited bandwidth and a marketing budget (5 million people signed by in the first few hours).

has the ability to simple price administrators out of the market - using the classic method of just outspending your enemy with a dumptruck of money - Simply by existing in the same ecosystem as us, they can and will increase our server/storage costs until admins like myself drop out. (THANK YOU PATRONS/SUPPORTERS)

If I wanted to open communicate with -- I fear I simply won't be able to play the same game as them for very long.... and I foresee plenty of other admins dropping out for that reason

ned,

@shlee I think lack of moderation is a key reason to block them from federating, and historically done in the Fediverse.

I'm told Threads has no option for reporting posts. Even if they did, you can report the most blatant hate-speech on Facebook and you will always get the same reply, that "Upon review, this does not violate our Community Standards", yet if you simply put "men" in the same sentence as a negative word, their misogynistic rules will auto-ban you. That's Musk-level "free speech".

@shlee

I am seeing numbers around 30 million on BBC news, but without actual verification it is hard to get a true figure.

That is 30 million people happy for META to collect 14 different types of data from them.

pilirin,

@shlee agreed and i support your position. you mention the more likely petaabytes of storage but did you also consider their development of and need to train their proprietary pseudo-AI? not only do they want to datamine us, they want to use that data exclusively for their own benefit at the expense of everyone else, eventually resulting in the rise of a weapon that will be used to ruthlessly lower overhead costs by eliminating wages and drive even more otherwise self-sufficient and productive members of society into poverty and suffering than they have already.

i don't agree with the idea that meta should be able to access any public sources of information or communication that they don't themselves own. the bots that they are developing are weapons controlled by billionaires in order to funnel as much cash as possible away from real people and into the pockets of rich fucks.

fuck that noise. defederate the fucker instantly.

kkarhan, (edited )

@shlee That is another aspect I thought was so selfevidential that it doesn't need explanation to any admin.

will basically act as a attack inadvertedly, and that'll kill the :fediverse: ...

They don't need to :activitypub: itself, but merely sleehammer traffic against servers...

You may know this as , but ulike the latter one, this will be a constant flood...

@shlee I'm going to put some question marks with the user count.

Simply for the fact that they lied about their video engagement numbers, and did massive damage to an entire industry by convincing them to pivot to video based on those numbers.

samwa,

@shlee I don't get it, why does people signing up to threads make your hosting costs go up?

vurpo,

@samwa Facebook pushes massive amounts of people with massive amounts of posts onto threads, they open federation to activitypub servers, and flood everyone else's servers with data and traffic. It ends up being a DDoS on anyone who doesn't have the money and resources that Facebook does

Homebrewandhacking,

@samwa

In short: Internet costs money.

Longer: If a million people saw this post then there could be over a million individual messages sent back and forth between computers, including where this one is.

FaceThreads doesn't care about that sort of cost. They just burnt 20 billion on VR that no one wants.

You, me and Shlee too? We would notice this as a HUGE bill.

Hope that helps! Support your local server!

@shlee

samwa,

Thanks @Homebrewandhacking
I think what I was missing was that threads is using Mastodon tech behind the scenes
@shlee

yuki2501,

@samwa @Homebrewandhacking @shlee Not so much our tech but our instances' bandwidth. Because they connect to them.
