@tantramar You need to have a ferret do that. We opened out front door one day and a slinky critter dashed in and ran under the couch.
After I found the flashlight and looked I see what I at first thought was a possum with needle sharp teeth then remembered possums are not reddish brown. A bit more looking and we decided it was a ferret.
OK next problem, we do not own one nor remember a neighbor having one. So I was off checking to see if one of the neighbors lost one.
After walking almost a block down found the owners. They were looking all over their house for "Bruce". Who was very happy to come to papa
Apparently he ran out the door when someone opened it and after running down the street knew enough to wait by a door to be let in. Problem was we were the wrong door.
@tantramar Yeah, I said that too at one point. You would think it's hard to obtain a stray cat when you live on the fourth floor, yet here I am trying to teach him not to occupy all of my desk all the time.
@tantramar That's a plausible hypothesis, although he's one of those cats that follow their chosen human around, so the moment I stop using the desk he's going to lose interest.
(for a stray cat he's incredibly social, and also has no fear of heights, apparently)
@jzillw yeah; the cats we had when I was growing up always followed my mom around. she complained about it — it could be a nuisance — but she loved it.
(as I pointed out in the alt text: I am a big jerk. 🤣 I’m also a proponent of indoor-only cats for many reasons, not least of which are fleas & ticks.)
@tantramar When I visited home from college somehow one of the neighborhood cats (there were many) would jump on my bedroom's air conditioner. He never did this when I lived at home. Either he did this all of the time or sensed that I was home. White cat with a blue and green eye.
I would feel read bad for him in the winter when he jumped on my AC unit and there was like 6 inches of snow. I gave him some of my cat's hard food, which he gobbled up. I would regret that when he did it at 2am.

@dkozlov@tantramar we had an orange tabby who once vanished for a several days and then returned looking very smug with a new, personalised collar complete with name and phone number.
Obviously we called the number and patiently explained that “yes technically he’s our cat. His mum lives here and he was born under our bed but actually he’s probably his own cat so maybe he’s sort of yours now, good luck?”
