"#ClimateChange kills. Since 2000, nearly four million people worldwide have lost their lives due to floods, wildfires, heat waves, droughts, and other #ExtremeWeather events that have been linked to a steadily warming planet."
But the non-fatal consequences add up to a litany of ill health. And that is - so far -not included in the cost estimates for these events.
"Acute health problems—smoke inhalation from wildfires, dehydration, or heat stroke—led to the greatest number of immediate visits to emergency departments or deaths. But other kinds of harm played out more slowly. Contaminated water or mold-related infections can damage health, as can loss of power that cuts off air conditioning and such essential health devices as CPAP machines. Closures of hospitals and the inability to access needed medicines play a role too."
The interplay between extreme-weather health issues, COVID-19, and a dysfunctional health care system will make the effects even worse than if these issues came separately.
@CelloMomOnCars@Hawaii it’s done a lot to recover, we have a wonderful mayor, committed to rehousing all and a lot have been, but there’s still a lot to be done. thank you for asking 🙏 (big long tail: our local med clinic is booked a year out. they won’t allow new appointments. you just have to keep trying every few months. fewer vets to help animals too.)
@CelloMomOnCars@Hawaii me too, tho it shows no signs of improving that i know of. it might end up being so slow that it’s imperceptible by a person, using person time (vs a historian looking back).
