We were asked to cancel our classes today and not go to campus because Stanford is playing University of Hawaiʻi in football and they needed the parking. 🤨
This is another reason for transit and bike infrastructure.

Thankful today to be at a D3 school. Where student athletes are students first (even if sometimes their coaches aren't thrilled about it when a lab goes 'til 4:45pm)

Football obviously more important than academics. And I suspect it's even more so in American high schools, but that's just as a Canadian outside cultural observer who cannot help but be in inundated by American culture.
@davidho Hawai'i is one of those places where bikes seem like an amazing no-brainer. The weather is mostly gorgeous, cars are expensive to import and pollute, bike infrastructure generates far less pollution per mile built, and bike infra eats up much less of the natural environment. Also the traffic is surprisingly horrible and bikes would fix a lot of that.
Make 'em eBikes, even, and charge with solar-generated electricity.
@wordshaper@davidho We recently rented ebikes in Hawaii and it was a blast. But only for a day, and then it was back to the car-centric garbage of relying on other people to drive us around. :(
@davidho College sports are meant to enhance education. At least, that's what they tell us. Canceling classes to enable a football game really puts the lie to that proposition. 😒
