@elonmusk 2. In response to the murder of Jordan Neely, have pushed unsubstantiated, misleading, and false information to suggest that the media is only covering the story because Neely was Black and the man that killed him, Daniel Penny, is white
@elonmusk 3. For example, the Twitter account @EndWokeness published a chart suggesting "Black on White" crime is the most common form of crime but receives scant media attention
Musk accepted the premise as true and promoted the tweet
@juddlegum Since there are far more white people in the US it really looks like this is saying that white people are most likely to be the victims of any crime by anyone, including other white people. Which statistically makes sense.
You can probably get the same graph if you ask cross section of the national to open their eyes for a moment in public and write down the racial makeup they see right then. Most people will see white people. Some minorities in mostly minority -
@juddlegum And the chart remains misleading. None of the columns is comparable since you they don't factor base rates.
Normalize by population breakdown at least?
@juddlegum
Also seems unlikely there isn’t an underlying classification bias that when there is an altercation between a white person and a black one, the black one is often labeled as the perpetrator even when they aren’t.
@juddlegum indeed it excluded all except 'interracial crimes' and that's why the name is like that so I can't say it's misleading, no graph for Hispanic on Hispanic and such Black on Black
@elonmusk@EndWokeness 5. Further, the chart does not normalize the data based on population. There are a lot more white people than non-white people in the United States
When you account for that, the rate of "Black on White" crime is similar to the rate of "White on Black" crime.
@elonmusk@EndWokeness 7. The reality is that actual studies of US media coverage show the opposite. Crime perpetrated by Black people receive disproportionate coverage.
@juddlegum It’s not really news that E Musk is a white supremacist. The information I’m looking for is how to effectively fight white supremacy now that we find ourselves awash in it and about to lose our democracy.
@juddlegum thank you for this. I have a question, the prevailing wisdom (to my recollection) has always been that black/black crime is far more common than black/white crime, but this chart indicates otherwise. Is this a change, or was that simply not true?
@juddlegum And yet most media outlets and journalists continue to post and maintain a presence on Twitter, which is signalling that they are ok with it. It certainly helps us as consumers to understand what these brands and individuals really stand for -- and it ain't good.
@juddlegum the on ramp to white supremacy is a mystery religion and it's amazing that nowadays, one can see people get hooked in real time.
what i think is new is the well honed sales funnel that's both well trodden and surprisingly predictable and yet confers the individual feeling of being a smart iconoclast to the adherents under its spell.
@juddlegum I am shocked, SHOCKED that the wealthy white guy who grew up in Apartheid thinks that white people should get more sympathy and that black people should get less.
it's important to point out that he's a fascist and that this has been known for a long time
he doesn't care about reasoned debate, he's doing white power activism with a billionaire amount of monies, probably trying to impress other fascists like thiel or the former pres
@juddlegum It's disgusting that Musk is using his platform and guaranteed media attention to promote bigoted conspiracy theories, and amplify white supremacist talking points. The man chooses to harm society every time he makes these comments.
@juddlegum also it ignores the fact that marginalized communities will be policed tougher and every case where a white cop feels "threatened" to draw a gun also falls under it.
#LyingWithNumbers is something one learns in 11th grade math, history and biology classes.
@juddlegum At this point in the evolution of social media, anytime something meme/macrolike is spreading around and it doesn't normalize for relative population, I presume malfeasance.
@juddlegum it also ignores all the non-criminal structural violence committed against Blacks. When Black people are killed by health care disparities, for example, it’s not counted as a crime. Musk literally grew up in an apartheid state, and benefitted from white supremacist policies. I do not hold that against him (people don’t choose the situation in which they are raised) but the fact that he has no self awareness about this situation does not reflect well on him.
@juddlegum Now we know why he bought Twitter. He can say anything and everything he wants, and no one can tell him no. It's his social media platform for his extremist right wing fascism without restrictions or limits on his lies and bullshit. He is king and no one defies the king. He kills messengers and banishes enemy to wildrness while giving freedom to fellow fascists. Only financial collapse of Twitter can destroy him now, and a new owner buys the ashes to build it anew.
I don't want to discount your point that he is a racist looking for support for his racism, but also we know from previous postings by Elon that he is completely ignorant about basic statistical reasoning. See for example his idea to use 100 systematically selected accounts as a "random sample".
What's dangerous is the number of people he influences with this crap as you point out.
It's common knowledge that Musk is a racist, a fascist and a liar.
The main two Qs are:
1 - Why are regulators not fining twt and shutting it down?
2 - Why is the US gov still relying on any of Musk's companies for any sort of projects, e.g. SpaceX? He and his companies prove to be security risks to the US.
Seems as naive and irresponsible to me as Merkel making Germany dependent on Russian gas.
