My name is Jan Wildeboer, I own a Brother laser printer that JustPrints(tm) since many years and I support this message :)

(and should you think that screenshot is fake — it isn't: https://www.theverge.com/23642073/best-printer-2023-brother-laser-wi-fi-its-fine )

@jwildeboer Personally I installed multifunction lasers everywhere and I still rock my because it wasn't yet and it refuses to die to this day...

@jwildeboer My Brother MFC-8***-DN all-in-one is 19 years old and still going strong.

derickr,
@derickr@phpc.social avatar

@jwildeboer our 2250DN has been rock solid for ages too. Had to refill toner once though. Works for phone, Linux, mac without problem.

@jwildeboer Can confirm. Bought my MFC-9120CN more than 10 years ago. Had to replace the original toner cartridges (which are only half-filled on delivery) after about 6…7 years.
It sometimes complains about (nearly) empty cartridges; just open, shake, put in again, stops complaining. If not, there's a little trick with the menu (I can share if someone needs, Brother support gave it to me once). Prints, scans & faxes like on the 1st day – from my Linux machine. Will probably survive me.

@Synchro@phpc.social avatar

@jwildeboer That is a truly excellent review. A printer that just prints, whatever next!
I have a Brother MFC-3770 which is not cooperating as it incorrectly thinks it doesn’t have a waste toner box. Fortunately I also have a chunky MFC-8690 which works perfectly, and still gets firmware updates despite being old. Only complaint is that network scanning only supports proprietary solutions like Dropbox instead of using local protocols like SMB, FTP, or AppleShare

@jwildeboer I love how the screenshot also includes an ad for Nespresso

@jwildeboer My name isn't Petter Tomatensson, and I'm not a tomato with a woolly hat either, but I own a brother HL-L2340DW, too, and I agree with your posting. 🍅 ☝️

@jwildeboer I got that brother to replace a hp laser jet 4100. It still printed. Just took 30seconds per page 😑

loehwe,
@loehwe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jwildeboer got one of these, too

aeno,

@jwildeboer well I got an OKI color laser that approaches its 8th year. it doesn't even have WiFi. and 3rd party toners are cheap.

gabriel,
@gabriel@fedi.gvisoc.com avatar

@jwildeboer @aral I support the message and your support. I have another Brother printer that just prints and with a scanner on top that just scans (both network, not USB) and it's been fine for years.

numbertheory,

@jwildeboer This is 100% true. I have this printer, it is great. Whenever people act like they're getting "robbed" from paying for ink, I have some sympathy, but each year it's getting smaller. Like, do you ever have to print color? If you do, just go to Kinkos or FedEx, or whatever they're calling it these days. At home, you get black and white, because that's all you need.

alex,

@jwildeboer I bought my laser-brother-printer in 2012 and it prints perfectly fine until today. The only maintenance I did was to exchange the toner once.

claus,
@claus@mastodon.com.br avatar

@jwildeboer Confirmed. I have a Brother HA-HA-I-have-no-clue-which-model and its best feature is that it prints when i tell it to print, and otherwise just sits there doing nothing. It's a good printer.

hikhvar,
@hikhvar@norden.social avatar

@jwildeboer I have the great parent of this printer. HL-2150N. Connected via ethernet. So flaky WiFi is out of the equation.

All the other is true. It just prints, last ages on a single toner. Will complain about empty toner, but will keep printing. So you have at least something instead of nothing, if you are in a rush.

Egoplacebo,
@Egoplacebo@aus.social avatar

@jwildeboer I have a fairly reliable (as long as it's used regularly enough to keep the ink nozzles from drying out) Epson inkjet, but I've been considering getting a laser to free me from the dry nozzle problem. Too many options caused me to put it on the backburner so perhaps I should go for this one!

0xmrtn,

@jwildeboer admitedly, i had to check the website - but EXACTLY this thing is currenlty sitting in my office. in all these years, i only replaced the toner 2 times and it justworks(tm) :dance_cool_doge:

@eliasp@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer bought my wife an Color LaserJet CP1515n nearly 20y ago.
It still works just fine to this day after printing more than 35k pages.

But I wouldn't touch a recent HP printer with a 10ft pole.

    @isotopp @jwildeboer Mein Gerät daheim im Homeoffice sieht dem verdächtig ähnlich. Ich musste nachschauen, bei den Systemdruckern steht HP Laserjet. Den Scanner habe ich länger schon nicht mehr verwendet aber sonst druckt das Ding einfach.

    hw77,

    @jwildeboer We use this very printer for 3 years now, I can support this message as well. Not a single problem with it. Was not aware that it is THAT populare, so thanks for pointing this out.

    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @jwildeboer Meanwhile here I inherited an HL2150N (same kind of printer) from ~2009 which still has toners sold and works pretty well (outside of CUPS being a bit annoying but well that's pre-AirPrint for you).

    If you have a spare Raspberry Pi or have the ability to run docker containers somewhere: Try one of those cups to airprint dockers https://github.com/quadportnick/docker-cups-airprint should make things easier

    I'm likely gonna get myself some used / refurbished once it will die...

    @jwildeboer Funny, I bought a Brother printer a few days ago, so I had a "Are there targeted ads on Mastodon now?" moment when seeing your post!
