@Egoplacebo@aus.social

I code, therefore I can pay my rent. Unless it keeps increasing.
My pronouns are irrelevant to me, I'll be whatever you think I am, but for simplicities sake I'm a single lesbian.
I tend to share photos of my pet rats & attempts at vegetable gardening, descriptions of short cycling trips and other outdoor adventures, the occasional rant, story or creative endeavor.

I wish I had more time for the creative stuff.

Rats eating yoghurt. You're welcome.

Since my current phone now has a smashed screen thanks to my butterfingers and a honing steel, I have succumbed to a temptation I've been resisting for at least a couple of years, geeked out and ordered a Samsung Z Fold5.

But as I want to continue appreciating my $30pm SIM-only phone bill, I've paid for the damn thing outright instead of on a contract, which is a first for me!

Screenshotting this post 👇🏻 in order to quote post it! I don’t know where people get the idea that quote posting = dunks, personally I feel that that opinion is just Twitter brain.

Every major social platform from Tumblr, to Facebook, to LinkedIn and more has the ability to natively quote post. This is because the primary use of such a feature is to amplify information w added context or to open a new line of discussion. Replies are used far more often for harassment but we don’t ban replies!

Egoplacebo,

@aral
I too notice the absence of this functionality, it would be nice if we could find some way to implement it without it being abused!

Recently joined a couple of dating/ friend finding apps because i have a tendency to become socially isolated and my social life has been virtually non existent for several years. These things are not within my comfort zone and to make matters worse, most of the people with whom contact has been initiated seem even worse at this than me..

I hate small talk, and asking others about general life stuff doesn't come naturally to me.
I'm far more comfortable monologueing about myself and trauma dumping, but that seems uncool so I am here wracking my brains for learned and scripted conversation starters with people who send monosyllabic messages like "hi" and answer questions with yes or no or super basic without any elaboration.

Person 'likes' a photo of me with a pet rat, sends "hi"
My response "hi! Do you like rats?"
Person replies "love rats"
Where do i go from here? "I have 3 females at the moment, they are brats! Do you have any pets?"

It's like pulling teeth and i feel like if i have to do all the work, maybe I'm better off just sticking with my social isolation!

Egoplacebo, to VirtualReality

If you've ever wondered about using Virtual Reality for fitness, here's the stats from a workout I just did (the last 3rd on the heartrate chart is while recovering afterward) in FitXR. It was an 18 min "combat" workout at advanced level, which I'm finding quite challenging. I recently moved up from intermediate.
My max HR for my age is around 179, I spent around 6 minutes at max, so as far as cardio goes, it does the trick!

A chart breaking down time spent in each heart rate zone. 6:50 mins in 162-179bpm 6:40 mins in 144 - 161bpm 6:00 mins in 126-143bpm 3:20 mins in 108-125bpm 8:20 mins in 89-107bpm

In which I greatly enjoy all the coffee I drank while testing out the Ember Smart Mug 2.

The price though... that's a bit of a problem.

https://gizmodo.com.au/2023/12/i-loved-the-ember-smart-mug-2-right-up-until-i-learned-how-much-it-costs/

Egoplacebo,

@alexkidman wow, that is one expensive mug!

I was recently disappointed by a heated coaster/plate device to put my coffee mug on - the plate gets hot but the coffee in the mug stubbornly refuses to soak any of that heat up, so your review peaked my interest lol.

I think the most I would pay for a mug like that - provided it worked and wasn't too fragile, would be no more than $40. Though I might go up to $50 if it had a flared lip, I've never really liked straight-edged mugs.

Programmers are also prone to excessive caffeine requirements! 😆

Egoplacebo, to VegetableGardening

I was so pleased when I signed a lease for this house because it actually had space I could use for my garden, I thought I was finally able to grow stuff in the ground instead of having a bunch of pots, but alas, most things HATE the ground. Only exceptions are rosemary, parsley and tomatoes, so far. Oregano seems to tolerate it.

For illustration, here are capsicum in ground vs capsicum in pot. The one in the ground is also at least several weeks older lol

Today I produced snackage.
Custard, Apple and rhubarb pies, then with the leftovers a tiny pie and parmesan puff with the leftover pastry scraps.

So much yummy 🙂

My 19yo daughter and I don't have much in the way of a social life so I have been looking at "Meetup" in hopes of finding some free/cheap activities where we might meet some new people. Joined a hiking group. Today we went on a short hike with a group of about 10 people at Lesmurdie Falls, was a pleasant experience 🙂 looking forward to future excursions!

Egoplacebo,

@jwildeboer I have a fairly reliable (as long as it's used regularly enough to keep the ink nozzles from drying out) Epson inkjet, but I've been considering getting a laser to free me from the dry nozzle problem. Too many options caused me to put it on the backburner so perhaps I should go for this one!

Blaize & Taylas hunting for sunflower seeds.. I just saw Blaize pick up at least 6 in her mouth (and trying for more) to take someplace secret to eat, little cutie thinks she's a hamster or something!

They do take their seed hunting very seriously, they know the sound when I scatter them and all come running out of their various hidyholes 🐭

Currently they are all being a hot water bottle for my lower back, which is quite nice except when they have a scuffle lol

We adopted Orsen a little over a week ago. Sadly, he has been diagnosed with terminal stage leukemia or lymphoma. We are giving him meds, in hope of some quality time with him -- but yesterday he stopped eating and drinking, a sign he may not be with us much longer.

A few minutes ago, though, he started devouring some baby food (smooshed peas), so who knows with these guys. I'm hopeful he will make it through the night, and beyond.

He is the sweetest and most gentle boy.

🤎

Egoplacebo,

Guy makes sheep noise at person in mask.

'Why the sheep noise?'
'Because only sheep wear masks.'
'Why sheep?'
'Because sheep all copy each other.'
'That guy is the only person I can see in this whole building wearing a mask.'

I like to point out that sheep don't follow each other because they're stupid, they do it because it helps them survive. Safety in numbers. Humans form communities for similar reasons.

Those sheep that break from the group are most likely to be someone's dinner. So why is being a sheep even a bad thing?

Moments when I wish my daughter had her license already; flat bicycle tyre 20mins into a ride, over an hours walk from home

Egoplacebo,

@melissabeartrix
In the end I walked my bike half an hour to the closest supermarket, in hopes that they would have what I need to conduct repairs. Figured if they didn't I'd lock it up, Uber home and come back with my car to pick it up. I found cheap puncture repair kit, hand pump and some teaspoons to get the tyre off the rim. 45 mins later I was riding home :)

In used to have a great repair kit but it was stolen along with my last bike. Gonna have to invest in a new one.

Egoplacebo,

@melissabeartrix
My whole e-bike was stolen not just the tool kit lol, from my garage. Took me 2 years to save for it (and again for the new one) so my new one has 2 locks (one for each wheel), a tracking device AND an alarm lol!
