Google Chrome will limit ad blockers starting June 2024

The "Manifest V3" rollout is back after letting tensions cool for a year.

snoopfrog,

@arstechnica The best time to switch to Firefox was the first time you considered it. The second best time is now. Firefox for Android also lets you install extensions, such as uBlock.

@snoopfrog @arstechnica I haven't used Chrome as my primary browser for ages, but I suppose this will impact Vivaldi as well since it's chromium-based. I'm giving Firefox a try as my primary browser since I'd previously used it only on a limited basis. It crashed trying to close a private window, and the theme I've applied disappears every couple hours. Otherwise it looks like it might suffice.

@dave31175 @snoopfrog good question about @Vivaldi!

StampedingLonghorn,

@arstechnica Good thing I never left Firefox. Gnome Web is getting fairly decent as well.

SinclairSpeccy,

@arstechnica So glad I use Firefox

@arstechnica What did people think would happen when they switched to a web browser developed by an advertising company?

blauwbaard,
@blauwbaard@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica People should never have moved away from Firefox. I sure haven't!
It's a dream on Android as well.

StefenHudson,

@arstechnica At this point, I seriously wonder what it would take to make Google reverse course on all this anti-ad blocker nonsense. Clearly not enough people care to make any difference, mostly because the majority of people are ignorant and will just accept whatever Google does or pay to make ads go away. Sure a lot of us will stop using Chrome, but it probably won't be enough to matter. It seems like the only action that would get their attention would be legal action, which is just sad.

jesuscova,

@arstechnica so they are hurting themselves, if you can install an adblocker you can install Firefox

@arstechnica "The 'Manifest V3' rollout is back after letting tensions cool for a year."
It's not a matter of letting people cool off. If they wait five years people still won't like it.

Kind of curious what happened to "do no evil." Sure, Google was never perfect by any means, but this past two years or so they've kind of gone completely nutso crazy trying to screw over everyone like never before. A lot of big companies have started acting this way lately and it almost always costs them.

@arstechnica it's inevitable, adblocker affects their bottom line.

@arstechnica wonder how will this affect Brave Browser?

@arstechnica Good time to switch to .

We need more code diversity in browsers, and other Chromium browsers are all based on the same code. Help keep browser diversity and competition healthy and switch to Firefox today.

Say goodbye to Chrome and Google's oppression.

@arstechnica

Slow suicide by the world's most popular browser. Oh well.
