amazed at phanpy.social's transformation of the mastodon web interface

I don't understand why, but somehow usenet news readers keep coming to mind as I use it. (This is a complement.)

just keep on noticing little bits of awesome UI design in Phanpy, like multi-image posts display the alt text underneath as numbered footnotes

@joeyh This is really cool! @msh how crazy would adding this be to coales.co? 👀

In any case, I hope this gets upstreamed!

@thatgeoguy @joeyh this looks cool I will have to take a closer look. I wonder if there are any implications it you tried to put this on top of the variant of Mastodon that I run on my server

@effigies@mas.to avatar

@joeyh This is amazing. Thanks for the pointer! (Though typing right now is a little sluggish in this interface...)

gpollara,
@gpollara@med-mastodon.com avatar

@effigies @joeyh this is the only down side I notice sometimes @cheeaun. It sometimes types sluggishly. Can't tell exactly when it happens, but mostly when my Windows computer running slowly (using Edge), or when using Chrome on a low end Chromebook.

cheeaun,
@cheeaun@mastodon.social avatar

@gpollara @effigies hi, I'll need to know your OS + browser + versions used. thanks! 🙏

effigies,
@effigies@mas.to avatar

@cheeaun I'm using Ferdium, which is an Electron App.

Version: 6.6.0
Server: Ferdium Server
Electron: 27.0.1
Chrome: 118.0.5993.89
Node.js: 18.17.1
Platform: Linux 6.2
Arch: x64
Build date: Thu Oct 26 2023 20:30:26 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Git SHA: d157b865
Git branch: release

cheeaun,
@cheeaun@mastodon.social avatar

@effigies thanks. Is it still happening? Perhaps could check the Phanpy version too in Settings → About 🙇‍♂️

effigies,
@effigies@mas.to avatar

@cheeaun 2023.12.06.efca016. It feels ~100-200ms behind. It's just enough lag to notice, but if I type at full speed, the lag doesn't increase. It's most noticeable when deleting because my estimates of how much I need to delete are off.

cheeaun,
@cheeaun@mastodon.social avatar

@effigies while typing, does the lag happen as in the typed characters appear slower than usual or the text highlighting renders slower than usual? 🤔

If possible, would be useful to screen-record the lag as I can't see what you see 🫣

Also it has some interesting cross-instance features. Can read other instances local timelines (when publically available). And can view posts on other instances, handy when you want to catch up on the gnashing of teeth of your enimies.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@joeyh a question about this cross-instance feature, probably better directed at @phanpy though: I'm seeing from the screenshot that it warns that interaction with the remote post aren't possible, which makes sense if that post doesn't have a local cache. But does it allow trying to import said post to make it “interactable”?

phanpy,
@phanpy@hachyderm.io avatar

@oblomov @joeyh clicking on "Switch to my instance to enable interactions" will try to load the remote post from your local instance. Depending on how things federate, replies/boosts/likes count might differ.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@phanpy @joeyh thank you!

joeyh,
@joeyh@hachyderm.io avatar

It does thread posts in the timeline. No more reading threads in reverse order. Also indicates when a boosted post is part of a thread.

joeyh,
@joeyh@hachyderm.io avatar

And it threads comments on posts. Including deep threading and collapse/expand of sub-conversations. This makes me much more likely to dig into conversations.

joeyh,
@joeyh@hachyderm.io avatar

And it bundles notifications together with some nice interface. And there are many other interface touches. Also page down scrolls properly (except in multi-column mode which is a bit janky, but which it does have, and which makes the columns nice and wide).

joeyh,
@joeyh@hachyderm.io avatar

I think the main thing about Phanpy is that it's designed in lots of ways to display enough information to scan quickly, but invites clicking to dig into things. I find myself clicking more than I scroll.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@joeyh wait, there's a multicolumn interface now? Last time I checked it either wasn't there or was … nontrivial to find.

joeyh,
@joeyh@hachyderm.io avatar

@oblomov I also bounced off of Phanpy earlier wanting multicolumn. It's available in the settings under "Experiments" so must be new.

I actually switched from a multicolumn mastodon advanced web interface to single column though. The other UI improvements improve the information density enough I don't need columns.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@joeyh Found it, it's under “shortcuts” now and it allows both a multi-column and a multi-tab view. I'll explore the thing more.
