Good morning & if you're in Venice make sure you pay you €5 entry fee to the city which debuts today (and will be levied on the 29 projected busiest days this year).

Enforced by random checks (with fines of €50-300 for non-compliance), many other city authorities will be watching to see what the effects are.

The lobbying to keep the charge low may have lessened its deterrence value for those not staying overnight in the city... but an interesting experiment nonetheless!

@ChrisMayLA6 yes, exactly. My gut instinct is the latter. The place is such a magnet for the mass tourists (including large organised groups), that my reaction above will be dwarfed by those with no choice but to just pay, raising revenue for the city.

(my cynical start to the day! 😅)

Two US citizens currently held in Russia were also going to be part of the deal, Ms Pevchikh claimed.

She added that negotiations were at their final stage on 15 February.

@fulelo can't have that many ships left, given the Bosphorous is closed to new entrants. Very effective strategy from - at least keeping their sea & coastline safer than it was (for cargo export but presumably also tactically).

Now that UK has (finally) rejoined EU's #Horizon #research programme, revived involvement has immediately his another bump in the road, caused by #Tory policy.

The limitation on #visas for scientific researchers & the high cost of obtaining entry to the UK for work, mean that while we are formally part of the programme, the return of #European researchers to UK based research projects is currently constrained.

The EU Commission is asking the UK Govt to ease restrictions... good luck with that!

@ChrisMayLA6 yeah this has been notable right from the start of , not directly linked to funding. Even for based funding (e.g. UKRI) it's totally reasonable for potential EU candidates to think twice re coming

  • visa issues & costs
  • uncertainty if could stay longer if life circumstances change

Neither an issue if seeking employment in other countries, so why go to UK?

Lesson = not all free movement was a bad thing, but way too nuanced for Mail / Express

@zleap @ChrisMayLA6 agree. I guess my point is the system doesn't per se restrict them (as long as salary high enough, which it may not always be for lower science jobs) but it disincentivises people to apply. Basically, why bother with the admin, cost & uncertainty of applying to work in the UK?

@timrichards no, I don't think so. I take the view that the default is reclined, and that when keeping it forward is a safety requirement, or a personal choice because it's more comfortable for eating or working on laptop (which is what I spend most of my time doing when travelling alone!)

Do people remember the surge in cases of pneumonia in China in July 2023?

Well thankfully wasn't a new pandemic virus, but in fact was a story about antibiotic resistance!

Was a surge in cases of Mycoplasma pneumonia, resistant to most commonly used antibiotic class 'macrolides' - e.g. Azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin
