Say what you will about generative AI, it's certainly crammed all of my timelines with creepy fake-looking images that my friends keep posting as "Amazing!!" -- even friends who are art aficionados and I thought would know better. It's having a strange effect on me, which is a growing distaste and distrust of images themselves, as if the whole visible universe is being covered with some kind of slime.
Even though it wasn't particularly creepy-looking, I felt that way about the latest Billy Joel video, which was an authorized deepfake. I fear that soon we won't be able to trust any visual depictions, whether still images or video.
@stevesilberman as an artist, these AI "artworks" everywhere are making me unmotivated to share and even make art sometimes. It's like a bad virus. Not only do they steal our work to "train" these AI, but it's flooding everything with trash and it's so overwhelming in a bad way.
@LaimesKudikis I mean, it's not even parody, really because there is no meaning behind it. No soul. I just find it very boring and don't know why anyone is interested in it.
@LaimesKudikis@artcollisions FWIW I'm not an artist, and I don't like AI images at all. I don't quite have the vocabulary to explain what it is, but there's always something off about them. When I get that feeling of "off-ness" I'll start looking at details - and then I start noticing all those little things that make no sense. The longer I look at them, the worse they get.
@stevesilberman Realizing that my brain has never actually seen anything, only interpreted electrical signals sent from my eyes, has changed how I view everything, let alone AI images hah.
@stevesilberman I recommend all artists who publish work online consider the tool linked below. I'm hopeful that one of the forms of backlash will be a growing market for 100% human made art specifically. I still do digital work for fun, but I now lean more heavily into physical media and I find that people respond to that.
No doubt that the fundamental aesthetics of generative "art" display the lack of meaning/understanding that is the void at the core of these things
@stevesilberman likewise: I want to be amazed, but I draw back, suspicipus. Sadly, this means I will miss out on enjoying some honestly beautiful or amazing images. So sad.
