LeonianUniverse,

The applause company reversed there decision on a subscription for vdr. Yet another example of blind entitlement and arm-twisting winning the day instead of reasonable discussion on people paying fairly for a good product. Leave it to the entitled to never want to gain without losing something in return.

fireborn,

@LeonianUniverse That isn't what hapened. The issue was people who had already paid for the app losing functionality. If they rereleased the app with new functionality and renamed the old app legacy and didn't update it further, no one would have had a problem.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse I don’t know how being angry about having something you already paid for taken away is entitlement.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse People got mad because they had to pay a subscription to a product when they were warned that it would become a subscription service and given a 25% discount. It's entitlement because we were all warnned and then people got mad because of it. They knew they would not be able to survive as a free service yet this has happend and VDR lost. I will give VDR another 2 years.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 @LeonianUniverse this is after the same people were told this wasn’t going to happen to them. It’s not entitlement to be angry over being lied to.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse Do you honestly believe they had to grandfather people into free features? no, of course not. The dev had to make the decision to keep the thing going and yeah, it turnned out to be a bad decision but still, people just don't understand the inner workings of business.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 actually yes they did if they wanted to stay on the App Store.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse I'm not saying the dvs were not totally in the right. It's just that now, they're not going to make enough money to keep going on. Low market potential equals dead app. you'll se.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 I don’t know. If people can make a one time donation, it might make things a little better. I’ve noticed something else about this community as a whole. The half that has disposable money seems to look down on the half that doesn’t. I’m personally part of the half that doesn’t and it’s frankly disgusting. The next time someone in this community tells me to skip the burger and fries and I might have enough money for something, they’re going to get a slap.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse I don't have disposable income either friend. Hell, I don't even have an income yet and i still feel its entitlement to just go in and complain until a company caves in. Quite honestly, I don't se them developing for Blind people because they've seen the ugly side.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 if I sold you something, one time fee, free and clear, and then came back to you a couple of years later and said by the way, I expect you to pay me every year to be able to use this thing, I sold you, and you didn’t get mad, I would have your head examined. you buy it, you’re at least supposed to be able to use what you bought for the rest of forever.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse Normally I agree, except that we were told that it wouldn't be something free and clear forever. Apps can't run like this and continue to be developed. Between development costs and the appstore costs, you're looking at a very hefty bill. That doesn't come out of nothing friend.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 not really. We were just told that if we’d already paid for it, we were in the clear. There was no duration on it. Even if there was, it would’ve been in violation of the App Store guidelines. It was either let us keep what we paid for or be pulled off the store.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse Statistically, that's depending on the 30% of working blind people to pay for the 70% who don't or can't.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 @LeonianUniverse A lot of us who don’t have money live in an area that won’t give us a chance to have money. I’ve been looking for employment since the day I turned 16, and do you know what I found? One scam. I can’t even get anything out of the state agency. They say they’re going to help and the mysteriously evaporate.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse If you live in the US, i can help you out.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I do, in a rural area that never takes anyone seriously unless they are perfect, Christian, and male. Just to clarify, I have no problems with any of those groups. I have problems with that collection of features being required to be taken seriously. I do, however, have problems with individuals in those groups for being pains in my rear.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I'm an Android user so I shouldn't give a shit about this. But I do anyway. VDR is a good app. FOr those who can support their development and happily pay, then pay for the subscription and support their development. I don't want to see VDR go out the window. I know at least one sighted professor who uses VDR to check the accessibility of the PDF's which they give to students at George Mason University. It's a good app. I just think the requirement rather than the option to subscribe rubbed people the wrong way and the way they handled it in the PR.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I mean heck, I would happily pay for an android version of VDR if they decided to develop a subscription-based thing for it at the start. WHo knows? We could get some exclusive features because those Apple Blindies don't wanna pay to use their own app.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 @rooktallon @LeonianUniverse there is an android version. It’s just under a different name. I have it. Got it for half off at Christmas time. I’m actually about to contact them to report a loophole. I accidentally stumbled across forgetting free voices.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse Oh shit really? How much is it and what's it called? DO you get the voices too?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @rooktallon @gocu54 it’s called Legere Reader. Regular price is $9.99, although you can find it on sale. You get one voice of your choice for free. The others are $3.99 per voice.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 Does it have Bookshare access? PDF reader? And all of the other features Apple gets with VDR? If I'm going to pay for this, I want everything VDR has with no exclusions. Android users shouldn't be left out simply because we're not willing or are unable to get an Apple device.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@rooktallon @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 bookshare, definitely. Not sure about PDFs because I never keep them

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse If I were to list all of the companies I've known who failed to survive by attempting to sell directly to blind people, we'd be here all day. Blind people generally have no understanding of the economics that bring anything to them. Free stuff from government/blind services. Free stuff from schools. Free money from Social Security. Then, someone asks for their support, and they demand it for free, too.

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse Not saying any of that individually is necessarily bad, but it teaches them that things are given, and they are entitled. People can have that position if they want, but don't be surprised when you want something, and no one stands up to build the product or service for you. If the government won't pay them, why bother, because blind people sure won't pay. That's why we can't have nice things. Sad.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @bryansmart @gocu54 you’d be surprised by the amount of people who simply don’t have a choice. We’re not taking seriously by employers, especially in rural areas and places where the far right gets to run rampant.

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 I live in South Carolina, and have a vending business. I always like to ask blind people if they've looked in to Randolph-Sheppard? Have they tried remote phone-based customer service? Tried being a phone sex operator or setting up an OnlyFans? Have to think outside of the box.

gocu54,

@bryansmart @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse I wonder how a blind person could do onlyfans? I mean, its visual right? It's not like you understand camera angles for perfect shots.

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse They do. Get an action cam, like a Go-Pro, with a wide angle lens. Another option is to mount a camera on a tripod with an automatic tracking gimbal.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@bryansmart @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I even sent resumes to humanware and freedom scientific. Even they ignored me.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@bryansmart @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 you can do it, especially if you have a Google pixel and guided frame. Don’t think I haven’t thought about it, but you actually have to be attractive and I’m not.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @bryansmart @LeonianUniverse That's subjective amiga. you may actually be attractive.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 @bryansmart do you want to find out? My camera is sitting over there on charge. I can get a decent picture thanks to that guided frame and make Be My Eyes describe it. I’m sure Google Photos would be glad for the change, considering all of the other photos, I’ve taken recently have been pictures of my lovely error screen.

gocu54,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse @bryansmart If you're serious, yeah, I'm actually curious.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar
rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @bryansmart @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 Do you get all the same features as VDR or are we excluded for some features as usual because Apple is paying to get everything while we as Android userws get scraps?

gocu54,

@bryansmart @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse I thought randolf shephard was dead when covid hit.

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse People running canteens and cafeterias in government buildings took a hit, but are recovering. Lots of other business types in that program: base dining contracts, interstate road sides, micro markets, vending routes, prison commissaries, etc. Those all doing great.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @gocu54 @bryansmart i’ve been looking for employment since the day I turned 16, and I found a grand total of one scam. You may have the few who actually don’t care, but I’d like to believe most of us are looking.

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 Again, how many customer service jobs have you applied for? How much phone sex have you done?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@LeonianUniverse @bryansmart @gocu54 I have applied for everything I could find. I’ve either been told to get lost or worse, outriding ignored.

patricus,

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse if you paid for something you expect it to be there because you paid for it not just licensed it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@gocu54 @LeonianUniverse @patricus especially if you paid for it twice.
