Then I thought, but it's only the laws THEY like against people THEY DON'T like DOING things THEY don't want them to do.
If they don't like the laws, and it is against them, they don't believe in the "rule by law." either.
During 2020's pandemic some people did not want to obey laws about masking. And some cops wouldn't enforce them.
@spocko what you're describing is actually how I'd define rule by law. The law exists to control people to do what they want, in their minds.
So, by that definition laws that they don't like are invalid and the only laws they like are the ones that are used to exert their will.
They also usually (always?) use parallel law enforcement methods to enforce "laws". Think, the KKK being parallel to the local sheriff. They're separate but sometimes work together.
@spocko so, in your pandemic example they'd chaffe at rule of law (wear a mask to keep community safe!) and they'd chaffe at rule by law (rule a mask because we said so damn it). But they'd rally to any one using the parallel law enforcement techniques to exert their will to NOT wear masks.
And they did. They used violence and threats of violence against electeds and workers and then DeSantis all but made it the law NOT to wear masks and that's when he peaked in national popularity.

AKA, Threats of violence from vigilantes.
I wrote about those threats & talked to the people in the Public Health field subject to those threats. It was terrible & made worse in states where the law enforcement didn't go after the people making the threats. Then this happened:

Ugh. Awful. I did a whole series on how terrible cops with guns in the schools are.
They don't keep people safe from shooters and they increase the school to prison pipeline.

That was also the case for the original fascists. Fascist movements in England and France had links to Italy and Germany, and had a selective view of immigration, informed by their racism and anti-Semitism.
Collaborationists talked a lot about "Europe", conceptualised as a space for privileged ethnicities over discriminated groups (contrasting with the European project of human rights and rule or law of the EU). You see that in Tintin "the shooting star" for instance.
@spocko I really doubt she could even explain why she's personally bothered by "all this crap". The things folk like her get upset about rarely affect them in any tangible, much less negative, way.

I heard a This American Life show on undocumented immigrants who got arrested. A woman who lived there said "When I heard crack down on illegal immigration, I interpreted it as a crackdown on illegal immigrants that were criminals. If there was a drug situation, violent criminals, pedophile, any kind of situation of that nature. That's what I expected." But when she saw it was parents of kids she knew, she got it.
