@StillIRise1963 Somebody in my local feed made the argument that anybody who sees a person in a mask should automatically put one on too (if not already wearing), for four reasons:
they may get flak for being the only one wearing one, and you can be moral support
they may have a vulnerable person at home and need to be extra careful
they may know something about the state of the pandemic that you don't
they may be sick
There are surely more, but I thought these were pretty good.
@StillIRise1963
When I went to a doctor checkup appointment I wore a mask, as I always do indoors or around humans I don't trust.
They asked me why I had it on. I asked them why they didn't.
Somehow, that ended the conversation right there.
@billyjoebowers@s31bz@StillIRise1963 I tend to get the "sorry I can't understand what you're saying with that mask on" interactions, well the jokes on them because my accent is thick and unintelligible anyway.

Surrounded by rwnj I am defaulting to saying what will shut them up.
I used to say I was trying to keep my Dad out of the hospital. But since he passed, I am answering differently. I say "I am around some super sick people, and I mask so I don't make you sick too" It usually stops conversation.
@billyjoebowers@Compassionatecrab@slowmart@s31bz@StillIRise1963 I wish I had the balls to answer with “you must be one of those people who have been in low earth orbit with a downed comms system for the last 4 years - we here on earth just went through a continuing pandemic, hence the masking. If you’d like to know more, check out various newspaper archives”
@StillIRise1963
Not my employer, thank goodness. We still require masks in all areas frequented by patients. There are even big signs saying we don't care if the health department lets people go without masks; our hospital still requires them.
@StillIRise1963
My employer has been really good on COVID. Our infectious disease department started getting worried way earlier than anyone else I know of- a coworker was required to quarantine after coming back from China in January 2020- and they continued to require masks everywhere long after most hospitals around here relaxed. I think some of our doctors wanted to require masks before COVID, and they aren't going to give up masks now they have an excuse.
@StillIRise1963 My husband was hospitalized last weekend in the oncology ward (just because that was where a bed opened). No nurses or other staff were masked. My husband wore his mask as much as was possible, but couldn't keep it on 24 hrs/da.
@kateiacy I’m sure he was shocked because it’s insane around cancer patients involved in different stages of treatments. I hope your husband feels better.❤️
@StillIRise1963 At my family doctor today everyone was wearing masks, one patient came in without a mask, and the receptionist gave them a mask. Contrast that with the dentist's office today: where none of the patients were wearing masks (at least the staff were wearing masks). Then off to the DMV to get my license renewed, where I was one of 3 people wearing a mask out of 50, and had to take my mask off for a picture
@StillIRise1963 It’s so bad. SO BAD. And the entire system, that was shit before, is in shambles. Read an article yesterday about the growing disparity between urban/rural death rates & it’s disgusting. That a leading western country would think it was in any way good, much less great, when it’s intentionally killing massive amounts of citizens with lack of care, is ridiculous to the highest degree.
Well, at least you are not the office object of ridicule for getting vaccinated. Then the anti vaxxers had the nerve to get angry with me when I said, "Get back to work, idiot."
@StillIRise1963 I had an oncology appointment a few weeks ago, at a hospital clinic. Big waiting room. Lots of people, all ages and types, all masked up… per the posted signs, per hospital rules.
Except for this one guy.
In an expensive suit.
All huff and puff and condescending attitude.
Looked like he might’ve been a hospital administrator.
What a twat.
I kick myself for not tearing him a new one for trying to kill everyone in the waiting area.
@GottaLaff@StillIRise1963 A healthcare worker posted in our neighborhood app that since she has gone back to work she has seen an uptick in cancer Dx and imagine that these people also got the vaccine.
Yes, I went off. I began with correlation is not causation and I assume she didn't understand that sentence either. 🤷🏻♀️
@MiriShuli@GottaLaff@StillIRise1963 The only medical professionals I've seen wearing masks during the past year have been the nurses, docs, and techs at our pediatrician's office.
Last week we were at the grocery store, and I made eye contact with the only person other than us who was wearing a mask. He happened to be a Black man.
It's just anecdotal from our north #OKC, but I feel like most of the people I still see masking up are Black. I don't think that's an accident.
