I attempted to help my brother with a confounding problem with his car this afternoon, and after a few hours of work, we were no closer to an answer than when we started.

Recently, his battery has been draining down overnight. He thought maybe he had a bad battery, so he got a new one. Same problem.

I went over there today and found that the car is drawing 1.6 amps from the battery even when turned off.

We started troubleshooting by pulling fuses. The car kept drawing 1.6 amps through all of them.

I pulled the main fuse, and the car still drew 1.6 amps.

For a while, we thought it was maybe the alternator rectifier, but that wasn't it.

We unwrapped the sheath from the main bundle of wires coming off the battery and found no shorts.

We disconnected the wiring to the starter and that wasn't it.

The car still draws 1.6 amps! We can't figure out what's doing it!

@splott@retro.pizza avatar

@MLE_online Did you figure it out? Don’t keep me in suspense!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@splott No, he lives in a different city, and it's the work week, and we both work, so he's on his own for a while

splott,
@splott@retro.pizza avatar

@MLE_online Actually, partner says “did they check the grounds?”

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@splott I'm not sure what your partner means!

splott,
@splott@retro.pizza avatar

@MLE_online I’m a little fuzzy on the details, but it sounds like if there’s a loose connection, it will basically ground electricity into the ground, so it’s not really going into any particular device, it’s going into the ground, like a leak.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@splott ah yes, that is common cause of these situations. The problem is finding where in the car it is

cda,
@cda@malt.social avatar

@MLE_online from both fuse boxes (the one inside too)? Generally the only thing not on a fuse is the starter motor. Haven't had a subi in a minute. busaru dot com might have the wiring diagram for it which could maybe help.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@cda Both fuse boxes! And yea, looking at the wiring diagram, the only things not on one of the two fuses boxes are the start motor, the headlight relays, and the horn relay.

I've had no luck so far finding the short

cda,
@cda@malt.social avatar

@MLE_online whoa. Maybe check the main ground leads from the batt to the chassis? I don't know if newer cars stopped doing it, but a grip of stuff uses the chassis for return and if that lead isn't secure components can end up finding weird snake circuits back (a stretch as it probably wouldn't start if this were it). Last thought would be to pull the ignition relay (or other interesting relays heh). Could be a wedged relay keeping something on like the ignition coil circuit?

cda,
@cda@malt.social avatar

@MLE_online 1.6A is a suspicious amount for a continuous short. Seems more like a "stuck on" amount of current. Have a thermal camera? ~19 watts might show up (at night).

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@cda I agree. something is weird. I do have a thermal camera, and if he doesn't get anywhere, I will take it over there.

bluGill,
bluGill avatar

@MLE_online I put a battery disconnect on my truck. Open the hood, pull the switch andei can walk away for weeks.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@bluGill that's ok for older vehicles but not a lot of modern cars with engine computers

bluGill,
bluGill avatar

@MLE_online batteries are replaced and people still leave the lights on often enough that all cars neen to handle battery disconnect. In some industries europe mandates battery disconnect.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@bluGill right, but if he has to disconnect his battery every night, that's not going to be good for the car's operation. The ECU often takes a while to get itself settled down again after being disconnected from power.

Once in a while is fine, but every night is not good.

In any case, it still leaves a short somewhere in the car that needs to be fixed.

HackAWeek,
@HackAWeek@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I read that you had the alternator checked BUT did you check for a draw with the alternator disconnected?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@HackAWeek yes we did

david,
@david@quakers.social avatar

@MLE_online could it be trying to phone home with a 3g (obsolete) cellular modem? This is a current Subaru issue for older models.

andy_warb,
@andy_warb@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online could be ghosts behind the dashboard. Did you try an exorcism?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@andy_warb that's the next step

kwf,
@kwf@social.afront.org avatar

@MLE_online I can tell you exactly what's going on.

The cars pulling 1.6 amps.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@kwf you can't prove that

Jesticulated,
@Jesticulated@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online A friend's mother had the same issue, and I belive it is the same make and model you mentioned. He pulled the fuse to the On Star system and the issue stopped.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@Jesticulated that has been a common issue because of the end of 3G support, but my brother's car is not equipped with that, so we can rule that out

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@MLE_online May be a job for an inductance tester? https://www.ebay.com/itm/395351715370 should be able to tell you which wires are hot without having to find or make contacts on each of them.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@scrottie I think my brother would probably rather take it to a mechanic than spend $200 on a tool he'll never use for anything else

rhythmisaprancer,
rhythmisaprancer avatar

@MLE_online When I worked as a mechanic I used something similar to this (an amp clamp). It was critical to solving these problems. Good luck!

rhythmisaprancer,
rhythmisaprancer avatar

@MLE_online Have you consulted the owner manual for fuse boxes you can't easily see?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@rhythmisaprancer As best I can tell, we checked all the fuse boxes

rhythmisaprancer,
rhythmisaprancer avatar

@MLE_online Dang. Hard times! Hope you can share what is found.

@MLE_online Subaru's tech bulletin suggests waiting 5 minutes after turning the car off (but less than 20 minutes): https://www.tsbsearch.com/Subaru/07-85-14

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@scholand Thanks!

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@MLE_online got a thermal camera? Something's got to be warmer than the rest of it

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@ferrix he doesn't but I do and I told him we should look at it with that

Ophitoxaemia,
@Ophitoxaemia@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I had a draw down problem on the Jag, had to pull fuses one by one through 5 fuse boxes of fuses to isolate it. Found it finally. Good luck!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@Ophitoxaemia we pulled every fuse. I even completely removed the fuse box at one point and we could not find the source of the drain

misternineham,
@misternineham@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online i had a similar problem on the truck but it ended up being the alternator. good luck to you on your quest

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@misternineham I thought for sure it would be the alternator after we eliminated everything else and we even took the alternator to the auto parts store to be tested but that ended up not being it, which was such a let down

douglasvb,
@douglasvb@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online does the car have an aftermarket alarm/immobilizer or any other aftermarket stuff (stereo, aux driving lights, etc)?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@douglasvb it has none of those things

douglasvb,
@douglasvb@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online 😬😬😬 then my guess would be a failing wiring harness which will be a nightmare to troubleshoot.

It's possible there is a hidden lo-jack style system a dealer installed at some point where they cut it directly into the harness before the factory fuses. Usually they don't work too hard to hide them but sometimes they do.

I've seen them in the engine bay and under the dash.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@douglasvb that's all I can think of this point. We checked everything that should have been the problem and didn't find anything, so it's got to be in the wiring harness itself

douglasvb,
@douglasvb@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online it could be a factory installed splice going bad. I've had that happen on an old Toyota before.

It could also be a rodent chewing on something. Do you see any evidence of rodent activity?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@douglasvb no evidence of chewing and we don't really live in a very rodent-laden area, so I don't think that's it

azonenberg,
@azonenberg@ioc.exchange avatar

@MLE_online What make/model car is it? I have a friend chasing an unexplained battery drain issue (although not quite THAT much standby current) in a... Mazda 3 I think?

Still actively investigating and no solution there either.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@azonenberg 2008 Subaru Impreza wrx

azonenberg,
@azonenberg@ioc.exchange avatar

@MLE_online So likely few if any parts in common then, unlikely to be a common root cause.

Keep us posted, it may well be a similar failure mode though.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@azonenberg I'll let you know!

mgerdts,
@mgerdts@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online @azonenberg

The wiring diagram on page 466 shows the battery being connected to MAIN SBF, which I assume is the one you pulled. Page 458 also shows the battery being directly connected to M/B No 14, related to to security indicator light.

https://onlymanuals.com/subaru/impreza/2008_subaru_impreza_wrx_sti_service_repair_manual_pdf

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@mgerdts Weirdly it's not letting me see the whole manual. I will look for another copy online

oheso,
@oheso@ieji.de avatar

@MLE_online @azonenberg It needs a firmware update. It’s trying to phone home via a cell network that no longer exists. I’ll try to find the link.

oheso,
@oheso@ieji.de avatar
MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@oheso @azonenberg he doesn't have that feature on his car. That was my first thought too

azonenberg,
@azonenberg@ioc.exchange avatar

@MLE_online @oheso Maybe it's there but just "disabled" in his trim of something? This is something my friend is looking into as well.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@azonenberg @oheso Maybe, but I don't see any evidence of it existing in his car

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I cannot help, only commiserate.

Buddy of mine in college had a problem with the battery draining. After weeks of bullshit, it turned out he had his interior lights on at the lowest brightness but the dome light was out, and he parked under a street lamp at night. So nobody noticed the rest of the interior lights being on (in the door and by the floor boards)

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@crazybutable oh man, how maddening
