@geerlingguy have you looked into Meshtastic at all? I feel like you and your dad could put out some awesome videos about maximising range for LoRa nodes that the Meshtastic crowd would love (and it would bring a lot of attention to the hobby too!)

@Ryanteck @geerlingguy pretty much... just simple messaging but I think half the fun is building up the network and making contact with random strangers (theres also the whole doomsday prepper angle). For me I'm mostly having fun designing cases and setting up little solar nodes :)

I attempted to help my brother with a confounding problem with his car this afternoon, and after a few hours of work, we were no closer to an answer than when we started.

Recently, his battery has been draining down overnight. He thought maybe he had a bad battery, so he got a new one. Same problem.

I went over there today and found that the car is drawing 1.6 amps from the battery even when turned off.

We started troubleshooting by pulling fuses. The car kept drawing 1.6 amps through all of them.

I pulled the main fuse, and the car still drew 1.6 amps.

For a while, we thought it was maybe the alternator rectifier, but that wasn't it.

We unwrapped the sheath from the main bundle of wires coming off the battery and found no shorts.

We disconnected the wiring to the starter and that wasn't it.

The car still draws 1.6 amps! We can't figure out what's doing it!

Eugh, my snack-obsessed kids have managed to defeat the smart-lock on our pantry by sliding knives into this gap and jimmying the latch. Does anyone know if some kind of protective cover exists that could prevent this? Thanks! (I guess it would have to go on the door side due to the door opening outwards!)

FTX fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison

SBF had asked for sentence of just 5 or 6 years. Prosecutors sought 40 to 50.

Introducing the second iteration of my project. I wasn't happy with the results of emulating aluminium extrusion as-is, so this is an entirely new construction system designed from the ground up for , heat-set inserts, and metric everything. Finished structures get M3-bolted together for strength, but prototyping is done with bits of 4mm doweling for speed - it took just minutes to pull apart the little cube and rebuild it into the bigger box!

Modern work:

you get a message in Slack with a link to the Confluence doc to prep for the meeting on Zoom, where you take notes in Notion, and track project progress on Monday and then update the Trello and you get to the end of the week and instead of doing fucking anything you've just moved bits of information around in 17 different databases and each one costs $15 a month per user...

andy_warb,
@andy_warb@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan my life is similar only constantly moving data between google docs, sheets and slides because different stakeholders require information in different formats.

After a long track record of releasing inaccurate, wildly misinformed statements, factually false claims and unreliable projections, we can infer a simple, if uncomfortable, truth.

Elon Musk fucking lies.

He lies about hyperloops, tunnels, Mars colonisation and self-driving cars.

And we can safely assume, he's lying about Neuralink.

andy_warb,
@andy_warb@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan just for the record, Hyperloop wasn’t just a lie it was an outright scam designed to destroy high-speed rail plans for California so tech bros would keep buying his “self driving” electric cars.

Setting up to fiddle with. First impressions - very bad. Booted up the HAOS image, it immediately autoupdated with an update that included a breaking change. https://community.home-assistant.io/t/home-assistant-400-bad-request-docker-proxy-solution/322163/23 describes the fix, but requires knowledge I don't have:

"Edit the config file" - doesn't say where the config file is.

"Check the log" - doesn't say where the log is.

"Find the IP address with "docker network inspect"" - there are lots of IP addresses, which do I need?

Argh!

How do I sleep past 5am?

andy_warb,
@andy_warb@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb do you have blackout curtains? We don’t have curtains at the moment (new house) and I frequently get woken up by car lights, security lights in my neighbours garden, the moon and various other things. Weirdly I’m immune to noise but any kind of light absolutely messes me up.

Also, it’s a sad fact but as you get older you generally need less sleep. Best thing to do is roll with it, get up nice and early and start your day (but make sure you go to bed when you feel tired!).

Folks, I have a small amplifier, two micro DC motors and a servo connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero W 2 with a Lipo Boost board for power. It seems to be "browning out" and crashing, which I'm guessing is because the components are pulling too much power. Are there any "cheap" ways to fix this without changing the battery (space restrictions). I was thinking maybe adding some capacitors or something?
