Climate Scientist laughs derisively: "By 2050, most long-distance holiday destinations will be uninhabitable, so I expect the majority of long-distance air traffic to be non-existent by 2050."
Phew. Hadn't heard it THAT bleakly during a live interview yet.
@markhughes tbc, of the eurocentric position of this question is taken by the journalist. The scientist insists multiple times to look at the consequences at a global scale.
@markhughes yes, I thought so, and attempted to make clear that the scientist was eager to broaden that view in the full interview.

@tbaldauf tbh I’ve read many times how bleak the outlook for 2040-2050 really is, but there are still not many public interviews where this is openly stated. Schellnhuber had that very drastic schoolbus analogy on TV once. I sometimes wonder if we need even more of such brutal honesty in public or if it still won’t change much.
@tbaldauf the scientific frame sometimes feels like a cushion to me. With such statements, that cushion is ripped away and I personally think it’s good

@sciloqi@tbaldauf - The last great auks were killed by those supplying museums and collectors of dead birds precisely because they were becoming rarer and rarer. Now the Great Auk is extinct. I see the same mindset at play here.
