Thinking about trying 3D-modlling (and maybe 3D-printing) again... Any recommendations for CAD software?

(Years ago I did some stuff using Autodesk 123D Design, but it got deprecated and is buggy as hell today)

@mfraz74 @M4x thx, I will look into it :blobcathearthug:

Here's a sneak peak at the main character of a new game I've started working on! It's really nice to finally get back into 3D modeling again ^^

I'll talk more about the game itself once I make some more progress!

Jain,

@rakqoi awesome work

Alright I think my mini is ready to print. I am SO proud of this. Compared to what I've made before this is a huge step forward. If you see any flaws please don't tell me my delicate joy can't be handling that right now. Slice and print tomorrow and start getting some paint on this fella.

@pidgeon_pete looks awesome! I can't wait to hear how the print goes. Will you post pics of painting it?

I have updated my recommendation of library for https://gitlab.com/nobodyinperson/sdfcad (an active fork by @nobodyinperson of the initial one)

Tried Onsdel. No, ES. An utterly unmemorable name, but a good progress even over the recent dev , which had numerous improvements already. But any version that won't make me accidentally open Transform 20 times per project would win me over, and this one finally doesn't :)
Modelling as I go, looking at the current shape and adding or cutting, is also more feasible, which is important for those of us without spatial ability.
And yes, my design is heavy on fillets.

eshep,

@Triffen Hadn't heard of this'n yet. Certainly gonna give a try for my next drawing now. I'm already a huge fan of , so anything that makes it less fiddly is a win in my book!

Triffen,
@Triffen@floss.social avatar

@eshep Yeah, I'm a fan of freecad too, and they are adding many improvements now, and sped up the development in general. They still suffer from 'we can't break workflows' and 'but what if', that hinders progress, but the movement is there.

people: how do you do ? I've been using and it's great for simple stuff but I feel like I'm already outgrowing it. What software should I learn? I'm considering and but I'm open to other suggestions. I don't want a ridiculous learning curve because I'm just doing hobbyist stuff, but I want something a bit more powerful that I'm less likely to hit the limits of.

jaywll,

@mcdanlj
Thanks for the extra insight! I'd heard the topological naming problem referenced but hadn't taken the time yet to understand it.

mcdanlj,
@mcdanlj@social.makerforums.info avatar

@jaywll Almost every description of "the TNP" I've seen is kind of inside out, in my opinion. They describe the nature of the problem in the context of the algorithm, rather than starting from the user experience.

What users care about is their design intent. Topological naming is a computationally cheap way to represent base features, but it does not express design intent. There are at least four approaches, which are not mutually exclusive...

  • Heuristics that sufficiently often correctly infer design intent (the Realthunder approach)
  • Explicit modeling of design intent through datum placement (typical advanced FreeCAD practice for many years)
  • Explicit expression of design intent by semantic selection (CadQuery)
  • Explicit implementation of design intent by modeling as code (e.g. OpenSCAD)

I'm curious whether there are additional approaches I have not learned about, that could be added to this taxonomy.

🥳 can now do chamfers, fillets and even both (chamfers with a smooth transition at the edges).

nobodyinperson,
@nobodyinperson@fosstodon.org avatar

@jaseg The math underneath will happily chamfer/fillet anything and also all edges, with SDFs there's no such thing as errors, broken geometry or impossible fillets. But the result may very well be 'nothing' (everything cut away) or an ugly blob.

There is no way to control which edges are touched. In cases where the fillets don't have enough space, it blobs out into weird directions. 😅 It is however often possible to cut away such unwanted blobs, especially with simpler projects.

@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@nobodyinperson Thank you for the explanation! I'll try it the next time I have a suitable use case 😁

Started this last night and finished it off today. Second agent this time being a little more subtle in his approach. Kept a copy of each stage (which I need to do more) so you can see roughly how it progresses.
