#BackInMyDay when you went to go start the car for the first time that day, you had to remember to push the gas pedal down fully and then give half a pump so the modern automatic electric choke would be set and the carb would be primed. Then before you set off, you snapped the throttle to take the choke off!
(contrast that to in some people's days, where they had to use a knob to set the choke, or maybe didn't even have electric start. ;o)
Well #BackInMyDay we didn't have video on demand. We recorded a TV show to tape. We had to program the VCR. Some of us were privileged enough to have a VCR with VCRPlus+. Those who weren't privileged and couldn't work out how to program it were cursed with blinking 12:00
#backinmyday connecting to the internet entailed a 56k modem screaming like R2D2 being tortured, and if you picked up a landline telephone or used the microwave, the internet connection would drop. #Limewire or #napster mp3 downloads might take ~5 minutes, and if the single user hosting that file signed off, well, I might just stick that 68% complete #ReelBigFish song onto my original 5GB iPod with a physically-spinning scroll wheel anyways and never know how the song ended.
Back in my day, when the cab of our pickup truck wasn't more luxurious than a gentlemen's smoking lounge, we could clean it out by spraying it with a garden hose.
#BackInMyDay people would hang little notepads and pencils near the doorbell (a button you pushed that mechanically sounded a ringer or buzzer) so visitors could write a note if you weren’t home.
Back in my day I would leave the data processing bureau where I worked, in downtown São Paulo, at 3:00 am, and walk some 15 km to my home out in the city suburbs, just to unwind and relax.
Today, some people think that walking 15 meters on the street at 03:00 pm is too risky...
@TootOfBob@StillIRise1963 You still can! (It works): (202) 762-1401 (It’s the same voice) - you might get a busy signal. Seems I might not be the only one to discover this tidbit :)
-Edit to add hashtags. STILL busy. It worked last night. It’s the same voice; the same guy that spent weeks recording individual clips that plaid back the time “At the Tone! the time is nine thirty six. <beep>” sub-edit: it worked
