I have used the Boox Palma almost everyday for more than 3 months and I have thoughts … lots of thoughts…

After reading the review of the Onyx BOOX Poke3 by @KelsonV I had a look at the BOOX range and ordered the BOOX Page. Here it is, on the right, next to my Kobo Clara HD.

So far, it has been good. I've installed the Android versions of Libby, Pocket and, yes, Firefox and they work fine. I've adjusted the E Ink refresh rates and button settings for the apps to work correctly.

Now on to more reading. 🙂

The Palma is an interesting gadget: a phone sized e-ink device with android. I kinda want one with a sim slot? 😂

Today I bought my first #fountainpen since decades and it shall be one of my daily drivers from now on.

It's a #Kaweco #Lilliput stainless steel fine.

However, due to my advanced #PIM processes, I rarely write things down on #paper.

I'd love to do so much more if there would be a great #FOSS solution for offline #handwriting #OCR. That would be a great investment by the #stationery industry! 🤔

It still offers better solutions compared to my #Boox #NoteAir #eink tablet.

My Faber Castell pencil, my Fisher space pen and the Lilliput by Kaweco. The latter two are for being available through my trousers pockets while being away from my computer. I use the pencil for short term notes captured on paper.

Awesome news!

's Reader just released a new version on and with paged scrolling. Meaning, it's no longer just endless scrolling, but you can use the physical buttons and/or tap to scroll page by page.

This is especially useful for devices, such as my Leaf 2! Don't forget to enable reduced animations for an even better experience!

I investigated buying a Mira Pro from BOOX. Apparently it's impossible.

Here's a quote from their support team:

> The Mira Pro is not available for sale on the BOOX Global store. It is on sale by our resellers. After checking with our team, we are sorry that none of our resellers can deliver Mira Pro to New Zealand.

Anyone on here using Fediverse on a Page? Recommendations for clients that work well on it?

uses a big number of stuff in their tablets. I first thought it's just the which they don't release the source code. But I've realized they are using many more FOSS stuff. Like the apps from which are not but if they were, legally, BOOX had to free their source code, too. One might argue what is the difference when they don't release the source codes. The differences come up when BOOX is in a court.

FWIW I'm really disappointed by the Onyx Tab X's resolution. Compared to smaller screens, lines are noticably more jagged in drawings.

Will review the annotation workflow nevertheless.

I'm facing an issue where Zotero's built-in PDF viewer doesn't save highlights in the PDF itself.

Consequently, while my PDFs are synchronised across my devices, my Boox e-reader doesn't recognize the highlights made on other devices. However, all other devices running Zotero can access the PDF highlights from the Boox.

Is there a way to make Zotero include the highlights and annotations directly onto the PDF?

I'm looking to upgrade my e-reader. I've been a long-time Kobo user and; I like their readers and I have a fairly substantial library through them, but I'm not a fan losing the microSD slot.

On the other hand, Boox has some intriguing options and a color e-ink option, but I've heard that they're more of a tablet than an e-reader.

And I'm also a little disappointed that there are so few options out there for e-readers and e-ink devices in general.

Does anyone have a tablet with writing capabilities?

How do you like it?

1/ By request, I've taken some pictures of how comics look like on my newly arrived Ultra Tab C .

I didn't buy it for reading comics, and frankly I wouldn't recommend it if that was your primary goal. Yes, it shows color - but the colors will always look rather flat, and there will often be some ghosting.

11 or so Android Ebook Reader Apps for Academic Writing Workflows: Annotations are Hard https://christiantietze.de/posts/2023/05/android-ebook-annotation-exports/

I tried a ton of stuff. I'm not happy with the results.

devices for academic reading and aren't making things convenient w.r.t. annotation export. So the workflow is going to be the same as on paper, I'm afraid.

Colorize Onyx Notes Vector PDFs (Really Rough Edition) • Christian Tietze https://christiantietze.de/posts/2023/05/replace-colors-onyx-boox-notes-vector-pdfs-really-rough/

Fun, little "sick day" project to get colorized greyscale sketches like @sachac's

I didn't want to learn how to uncompress PDFs and how the GhostScript syntax defines stroke colors when I started this, but here we are.

I also found out that the PDF syntax is likely not my thing. )

Is there any truly great reader for 'academic' workflows? (Using this on eink tablet)

I want to highlight sections and annotate. Most of the time I want to annotate with a sentence or three.

It appears that most ebook readers render ePub beautifully, but then only support highlighting; or, like Moon Reader, the UI contains animation that apparently cannot be toggled off, so reading is bad on eink

My wife and I decided to go to bed at 20:30. We read a bit before sleeping instead of being cooped up in our separate offices. It has been hectic at work for the past few days.

I am "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi on my Leaf2. I got the KOReader app to sync the highlights to and then to . It integrates surprisingly well, almost like a stock experience.

I use Pihole/Netguard to block the telemetry to Alibaba and co.

Good night, Mastodon!

I'm really happy with the device as a reader and note taking tool. The pen feel and eink is nice.

But exporting book annotations in a useful format for processing is 👎

I'm apparently better off going through the annotations inside the app, just like I'd process book annotations with the book on my desk.

Just bought myself a tablet to use with and other stuff. Quite impressed! Please share any killer tips or hints!
