In talking about the shortcomings of carbon capture and storage #CCS, we talk a lot about the failures of capture and not enough about the failures of storage.

Und Meeresschutzgebiete sind nicht generell ausgenommen, sondern nur bestehende Schutzgebiete, keine neuen. Pipelines dürfen auch durch bestehende Schutzgebiete gebaut werden. Die Mitarbeiterin des BUND stellte auch Vieles schief dar - CCS geht auch ohne Öl-/Gasförderung, Speicherkapazitäten sind deutlich größer als von ihr angegeben (…). 🤨
Wie hoch ist'n die Wahrscheinlichkeit dass sich in den potentiellen #Lagerstätten für #CCS nach der Entnahme der Original-Rohstoffe #Risse gebildet haben weil sich die #Statik geändert hat?
@christianschwaegerl@ZDF Ich bin bei dem Thema auch skeptisch. Da es im Kapitalismus systembedingt immer um Profitmaximierung geht, bleibt meistens die Sicherheit auf der Strecke. Bei Greenpeace gibt es zu dem Thema #CCS einige Infos. Vielleicht, wenn auch natürlich von der "grünen" Betrachtungsweise aus, wirken diese erhellender. Aber sehr wahrscheinlich kennst Du die Argumente bereits.
Während die #FDP beim Kampf gegen den #Klimawandel vom Technologiemonster #CCS als alternativlos redet und von satten, langfristigen Gewinnen aus staatlichen Haushaltstöpfen träumt, gibt es wahrscheinlich eine sehr viel einfachere und billigere Option, die gleichzeitig auch noch großflächig Ackerböden verbessern würde: Gesteinsmehl. Aus Basalt.
Gestein verwittert. Dabei bindet es CO2 langfristig. Zur Zeit schätzt man, dass 5 Tonnen Basaltmehl 1 Tonne CO2 binnen 5 Jahren aufnehmen kann. Beim Verwittern gibt das Gestein außerdem Mineralien frei. Bringt man es zur CO2-Kompensation auf Äckern aus, verbessert man damit also gleichzeitig den Boden - kostenlos. Gärtner kennen das.
Nachteil: man müsste Basalt abbauen. Die 5 Mio Tonnen jährlich, die in deutschen Steinbrüchen als Abraum anfallen, reichen nicht weit.
Aber zumindest erforschen und durchrechnen sollte man diesen Weg ernsthaft, bevor wir anfangen, das Land mit riesigen Carbonabscheidern voll zu pflastern.

It's no wonder people confuse carbon capture and sequestration (#CCS) with carbon dioxide removal (#CDR). The people naming these CDR techniques keep calling them direct air CAPTURE and direct ocean CAPTURE.

Ich habe gerade gelernt, dass ein Problem der nationalen Wasserstoffstrategie anscheinend ist, was man mit dem ganzen entstehenden Sauerstoff macht.
Das ist ein ganz wichtiges weiteres Argument für meinen langjährigen Vorschlag, dem Prinzip "alles anzünden" Verfassungsrang einzuräumen.
@pikarl@Fischblog Könnte man machen, noch besser wäre abfüllen, denn das wird bei Einsatz von #CCS ein begehrtes Gas: Mit der OxyFuel-Technologie wird Kalk, Erdgas usw. mit Hilfe von reinem Sauerstoff verbrannt statt mit Luft. Dadurch wird der Luft-Stickstoff aus dem Abgas genommen (normal 70 Volumenprozent), was die Aufreinigung des Abgases deutlich erleichtert. Je weniger Fremdstoffe im Abgas, desto leichter und billiger die CO2-Entsorgung im Untergrund. Bisher gilt OxyFuel als sehr teuer.
@mango Argumentation der Chefin des @GFZ : Ein Restrisiko gibt es (Undichtigkeit im Deckgestein oder an der Bohröffnung), aber das Gas liegt in Gesteinsporen viele Hundert Meter tief, die es ziemlich gut festhalten. Mit der Zeit reagiert das CO2 mit dem Gestein, wird also fest, oder sinkt mit Salzwasser im Gestein ab. Im Meer hätte Ausgasung lokale Folgen, aber selbst wenn extrem hypothetisch alles CO2 freigesetzt würde, wäre es „nur“ derselbe Effekt wie ohne #CCS.

The Decatur, IL plant received $281 million in taxpayer dollars.
It produces ethanol from corn (grown using a lot of diesel and fossil fuel-derived fertiliser).
The plant has captured only 10-12 percent of the plant’s emissions at most.
"Some studies have shown that ethanol blended with gasoline is worse for the climate than straight gasoline because of the vast amounts of land needed to grow corn, plus emissions from making it and burning it in vehicles."

This makes explicit why the #FossilFuel industry is pushing so hard for "carbon capture" and "hydrogen with #CCS": It's an excuse to keep pumping oil and gas.
