3/ Snip "Capitalism has forced the hyper-specialization of various regions into profitable mono-cultures which create single points of failure in the #food system. Just one example: 90% of the green leafy vegetables produced in the US from Nov — Mar are grown in the Yuma, AZ area. We import beef from South America & fruits from all over the globe. Staple grains have become just another globally traded commodity like steel or rubber. What this means is that practically nowhere in the developed world, & most especially not in the US, can people support themselves on locally produced foods. #Farmers markets are in no way capable of offsetting a major gap in imported foods. We are completely dependent on a highly complex global logistics chain in order to eat."
#Agriculture is pivotal to #Pakistan’s economy, contributing 23 per cent to the #GDP & employing 37.4pc of the labour force. With 70pc of the country’s exports directly or indirectly linked to agriculture, disruptions in this sector can have profound #economic impacts. Recent #protests by #farmers, sparked by governmental policies & market conditions, have thrown the sector into #turmoil, exacerbating the ongoing challenges of #inflation & low #ForeignReserves.
Just saw this:
"Recently, #farmers in Wilmot were blindsided by a directive from the Region of Waterloo, acting on instructions from Premier Doug Ford: sell their farmland for a new, undisclosed development project, or face expropriation.
***This news came without warning, without consultation, and without the transparency the community expects and deserves.
Here is a petition demanding Premier #Ford step up to protect our farmers. (Petition link below)
Premier Doug Ford has stated publicly that he’s committed to being "for the people," yet his direct involvement and orders to municipalities to prepare "shovel-ready sites" for forced urban expansion reveal a different agenda.
In April, #Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles confronted the Ford Government about these plans, only to have the Premier refuse to answer, while his Minister of Economic Development justified the expropriation by admitting to vetting lands specifically sent by municipal partners.
This isn’t just about land; it’s about homes, livelihoods, and our community's future. And, if this can happen in Wilmot Township, it can happen anywhere.
Here's what's at stake:
The expropriation of 770 acres of land without fair dialogue.
Displacement of families who’ve farmed this land for generations.
Potential loss of family businesses, local food supplies, and damage to the environment.
Premier Ford and his government need to listen and act in the interest of those affected. That's why we're calling on you to help put pressure on Premier Ford to step up, show he's for the people, and protect our farmers.
As the #ClimateCrisis forces people to abandon their land in #Rajasthan, a new industry has sprung up in the desert state, with thousands of gaily decorated vans setting off to sell ice-cream across the country. #ClimateChange
