[#Pakistan's] Supreme Court has issued a landmark directive to the government, ordering the establishment of a climate change authority within 14 days. "
Editorial in Dawn - Pakistan's oldest English Daily:
"The writing is on the wall. The time for incremental steps is over. The scale of the challenge requires bold, decisive actions that reflect the urgency of the moment."
This looks so good - a Pakistani hand-drawn animated film! Made by Mano Animation Studios and director Usman Riaz, it looks like a cross between a Cartoon Saloon and a Studio Ghibli film!
The Dilbar Hotel in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, has been a hub and haven for Kashmiri Muslims since 1950, when its original owner, Malik Jamal, opened it as a small teashop. But it wasn’t the tea that got locals’ attention; it was the hareesa and tabaq maz Jamal would bring from home for his lunch. Today, his son, Malik Aslam, runs the restaurant (hotel and restaurant are used interchangeably locally) fully aware it is perhaps the only one in the country serving food from the Kashmir valley. Atlas Obscura has more, including why Aslam believes he is the custodian of a culinary tradition that must be treated like a precious heirloom. https://flip.it/oxoBvU #Culture#Pakistan#Food#Foodstodon#Travel
"n K-P, the consequences of #GlobalWarming and #ClimateChange are evident in the changing of the #monsoon season, which now falls at a time when the #strawberry cash crop, a speciality of Charsadda, is to be cultivated."
".. unusual rains .. destroyed approximately 80 per cent of the fruit’s crop, leaving farmers in a deplorable state... "
@junesim63 this article by a researcher from the University of Bath makes a similar point for #Pakistan, but less toned-down
The gist is, the way capitalism (finance) is structured is making sure no renewables transition occurs, despite a fall in generation costs. The solution is gov led and funded transition
The only difference is the #UK can afford either path, but Pak can only afford green
"The country has witnessed days of #ExtremeWeather, killing scores of people and destroying property and farmland. Experts say #Pakistan is experiencing heavier #rains than normal in April because of #ClimateChange.
In the mountainous northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has been hit particularly hard by the deluges, authorities issued a flood alert because of the melting of #glaciers in several districts."
Brilliant article on the challenges facing transition to renewables, and why its unlikely
"while the cost of renewable power is now lower than that of fossil fuels, renewables are not a profitable business. The particularities of the .. market structure are the causal factors here... Making sure that capital gets its pound of flesh has crippled the country."

⚠️ Confirmed: Network data show a disruption to internet connectivity in #Pakistan affecting multiple providers with high impact to Transworld and Nayatel followed by recovery; operators attribute the incident, which comes amid ongoing X/Twitter restrictions, to a technical issue
Back in 2011,Gov decided to distribute laptops to the top performing kids in each public school. They did factor in some of the families might sell those laptops immediately, but they also provided free wifi for ALL students outside schools+unis+major transport hubs.
10 years now, every single professional coder in the country either has a friend or themselves got into IT only because of the laptop. Some families still use their decade old laptops today.
@lzg the "laptop scheme" faced crazy amounts of criticism even back then. But now its mostly gone.
It single handedly gave #Pakistan a growing IT sector inspite almost a total lack of the subject in public schools and colleges back then.
And these kids have now spurred much more development in the form of IT institutes and subjects across the board, as demand for both jobs and computer literacy have increased.
No critics of the policy now, in fact theres demand for another round lol
"#India will enter #Pakistan to kill anyone who escapes over the border after trying to carry out terrorist activities in the country, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told CNN News18 on Friday. Mr Singh's comments come a day after Britain's Guardian newspaper published a report alleging the Indian government killed 20 people in Pakistan since 2020 as part of a broader plan to eliminate terrorists living on foreign soil"
