My MC has an intuitive knack for mechanical things. He never got much of a formal education, but he still managed to make a good living fixing cars... right up to the point that he killed John and everything went to hell.

He probably never even pondered the question. He doesn't see his deeds as evil, he's just reacting to circumstances. His mindset is pure self preservation, with a generous helping of self pity on top.
It leads him to acting in a very ruthless manner, leaving a trail of destruction behind.
