Moring run

We were at Ancrum and decided to run along the Borders Abbey Waye from Harestanes across to the Waterloo Memorial via the ‘Count’s Folly’ a C18 observatory and summer house.

1k road and then mainly footpaths and open farmland with a section of woods at the beginning and end. 13.5k, balmy temperatures, mainly dry underfoot.

This rather gorgeous five-storey tenement on University Avenue is on my list of 'Why the heck is it not listed?' Glasgow buildings.

I can across this C-Listed late 19th Century Villa on Maxwell Drive in the Southside of Glasgow quite by accident yesterday. It's a really nice building in a very unusual style for the city.

Another very different, but still beautiful example of a red sandstone Glasgow Tenement. This one is on Valleyfield Street in Springburn. This building is beautifully proportioned with quite fantastic chimneys, and it would probably be listed if it were in the west end of the city, but it currently has no legal protection.

Free Renaissance style warehouse at 137 Trongate in Glasgow. Built in 1885, it was designed by James Sellars, an architect who has had a major influence on how the city looks today. It lies boarded up and decaying, and has been for some time.

This is one of several listed buildings in a similar state along the Trongate, a major thoroughfare in Glasgow, and they give the entire area a very run down feel.

I feel Glasgow City Council has neglected this part of the city centre for way too long and that, regardless of who is running it, should be doing a lot more to bring such buildings back into use. And by this, I don't mean knocking them down and replacing them with generic-looking new buildings, but actually properly bringing the back into use.

This map from Historic Environment Scotland gives you an idea of just quite how many important historic buildings there are in Glasgow.

Pink dots: C Listed Buildings; Blue dots: B Listed Buildings; Red dots: A Listed Buildings.

In my opinion, there are also other important building which are not yet listed so the actual number will be even greater than this map suggests.
