Is this the best gushet building in Glasgow? A gushet building is one constructed on a narrow strip of land at a junction between two roads (in this case Paisley Road West and Govan Road). Designed in a Renaissance style by Bruce and Hay, it was built in the 1880s as the Ogg Brothers Drapery Warehouse and Department Store.

Atlantic Chambers on Hope Street in Glasgow. Constructed in 1899, it was designed by J.J. Burnet in the Free style and influenced by contemporary 'elevator' buildings in Chicago. At the time it was built, it was described as being fitted out with all the latest features, like a passenger elevator going all the way to the top and electic lighting throughout!

I love the two buildings in the foreground of this photo, but especially the skinny little one where Subway is. They're on Argyle Street in central Glasgow and are just great bits of architecture. The signage on the ground floor shops does rather detract from the rest of the buildings, though.

Characteristic features of the Scots Baronial architectural style. On the left is a pepperpot turret (also known as a tourelle), while to its right is a crow-stepped gable. Together these features help give Glasgow's many Scots Baronial buildings their distinctive look.
