I residenti del quartiere degli stadi sulla riva sinistra hanno registrato un videomessaggio in cui affermavano che l'occupante stava progettando di costruire alloggi per i russi sul sito delle loro case demolite.

embassy in Poland boasts of ‘rebuilding Mariupol’. Only it omits a minor detail - the Russians are not rebuilding in the sense of renovating or rebuilding existing buildings for their existing residents.

What they do is demolishing existing buildings and raising new multi-family houses in their place, offered on the open market, which are unaffordable for existing residents…. because no one will give a mortgage to a person whose flat has been demolished! Residents rendered homeless by the Russian army are thus left in the lurch, as can be seen from the many desperate appeals they publish on Telegram.

The Mariupol authorities also officially run a housing restitution programme but, in typical Russian government fashion, they use many tricks to make it a sham - for example, the new buildings have a slightly different address and plot number and the allocation is no longer ‘due’! Or it turns out that the person in question still has a (also ruined) allotment garden, so as a ‘holder of two properties’ the return of the flat is also ‘not due’!

Such ‘reconstruction of Mariupol’ thus has the character of a exploitative colonisation of the city by the new owners rather than a real reconstruction of the city, and on top of that it only concerns attractive plots of land near the sea and in the centre. Hundreds of blocks of flats in popular bedroom neighbourhoods have remained without water, electricity, without windows and with holes in the roofs for two years.

P.S. I can provide numerous appeals from Mariupol residents on request

Today marks two years since the defenders have left the Azovstal plant, the last outpost of the city. The garrison guarded it for 86 days, but in May 2022, they received an order to go into captivity to save the lives of personnel.

Now, more than 1,500 Ukrainian soldiers are still in Russia's imprisonment, enduring brutal torture, inadequate detention conditions, and a lack of medicine, proper nutrition, and hygiene.

Stand with Ukraine. Raise your voice and share the truth to free Azovstal defenders.

When you try to communicate with them, they listen but do not hear, they look but do not see. Their thoughts are with him, with their Hero.

Today, it is hard to say how many Ukrainians have died since the full-scale invasion started: the military, civilians, from occupied territories.

There are many thousands missing, wounded, imprisoned (military and civilians) in Russian prisons, kidnapped children.

It is impossible to say how many people died in the first TWO years of the full-scale war in Mariupol, Lysychansk, Popasna & Sievierodonetsk - there were reports of large casualties among civilians. There is no access to Ukraine territories due to Russian occupation.

At the start of 2024, Human Rights Watch has estimated that at least 8,000 civilians were killed in during combat for the city. Obviously, the number of civilian victims can turn out to be much larger.

Let's finally stop this war. Ukraine must win and be restored.

MARIUPOL: THE PEOPLE'S STORY

Mixed with the testimonies of a dozen survivors, most of them young women, terrible scenes retrace from the inside the siege of Mariupol, a large port in southeastern Ukraine on the Sea of Azov, from the start of the Russian invasion on February 24 to the surrender of the last combatants entrenched in the Azovstal metallurgical complex on May 21.

authorities in occupied Donbas issued, from the name of “Donbass People’s Republic”, a decree about “nationalisation of abandoned accommodation resources”. Or, in simple words, taking away apartments from residents who have been kidnapped, killed, expelled or mobilised into Russian army under occupation. The same process had been also done in earlier this year.

These decrees are of course illegal from the point of view of even laws of Russian Federation, but this had never prevented Russian authorities from actually conducting any actions they wished in the past. Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republic had been always legal “black holes” and after the formal annexation by Russia they remained very selective in terms of application of Russian law. Historically, it has been always the case with other “self-recognised republics aligned with Russia” such as Abkhazia or South Osetia. For example, Russians had been for decades traditionally registering stolen cars there because it allowed them to legally drive the vehicles inside Russia and pay reduced mandatory car insurance.

Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in 's hands.

In Apr 2014, occupied Mariupol. But still, residents found a way to vote in elections.

Mariupol is occupied again.

So we spoke to someone who secretly organized balloting then to ask: why can't we hold them now?

It’s an argument that Tetiana, who risked her life to help hold elections before, reluctantly agrees with.

In April 2014, Russian troops occupied for the first time.

But it didn't stop Tetiana Ihnatchenko-Tyurina from helping to organize the presidential election.

Occupational authorities of announced that anyone who doesn’t apply for citizenship will be forcibly expelled from their own apartments and deported from the town. Russians claim these people - who lived in Mariupol all their lives - are now “foreigners” and introduced numerous laws that make their lives unbearable:

  • pensions, healthcare and social benefits are blocked;
  • employment in blocked (Russians introduced “foreigner employee quotas” targeted at Ukrainians)
  • anyone critical of occupation or not showing sufficient enthusiasm of Russia has been deported with their families already

authorities do not penalize acceptance of Russian citizenship on the occupied territories if it’s done under duress and in order to survive the occupation, but many people still refuse to apply for it because they feel it’s equivalent of recognising the occupation.

Please keep that in mind next time you hear “east of Ukraine is mostly Russians anyway” - it didn’t happen on its own, but as result of planned depopulation efforts by Imperial Russia and USSR. And now we’re watching it live.
